Description

An Escaper is deemed to have succeeded and to be 'gone away' when he reaches, safely, one of the targets outside the perimeters of the Castle as marked on the board. The exact score is not required providing he lands on or passes the target. v0.9.3 [2009.11.23]: Minor bugfixes + new 2x GPU shader on Windows. Data files are now included in release. We can, in part, agree that “they don’t make them like they used to” but at least we know the new edition still has wooden pawns!

An Amiga computer game titled Escape from Colditz was created in 1990 by Digital Magic. Based on the board game, it required the player to help four prisoners escape by exploring the castle, finding equipment, solving puzzles and digging a tunnel. [4] The attribution to the devisers of the game and particularly the reproduction of the signature of the key figure, P. R. Reid, are still there, but, not surprisingly, the mention of the T.V. series [which I watched assiduously at the time] has been omitted. Alsoleft off the boxis thereference to his two"memoir" books about his time and experiences in Colditz. These are still worth your attention. Seventy-five years ago, Major Reid braved barbed wire, searchlights, and armed guards to Escape from Colditz. Now it’s your turn to do the same._x000D_ Reading through the supplementary information supplied in this booklet, should help you to recreate the atmosphere of Colditz Castle during the war.

Forty Pawns - the PoWs; in groups of different colours representing the Escape Teams of various nationalities inprisoned in Colditz as follows. Safe Areas (See Legend Diagram) may be used by all PoWs reaching them by dice thrown in their turn. A PoW may only use the Staff Car if he holds the relevant Opportunity Card and reaches the car by dice throws in his turn(s) giving up necessary equipment en route. No PoW or German can pass through or over another man. He must go around or move him in accordance with the rules. See Do Or Die, Staff Car and Tunnel rules. An Equipment Card may benefit any number of PoWs of a team during the turn in which it is used, provided only that the dice throw and free circles allow their movement and rule 23 is observed.

Using an item means placing an escape marker on the obstacle. The markers are little cardboard exclamation marks, contrasting with the otherwise premium wooden pieces and cards. Allies and guards alike can then pass freely through the obstruction, with guards able to optionally destroy the item as they traverse it, stopping further pieces from moving through. Other mechanics include safe spots for prisoners, saving them from being arrested, and spotlights that illuminate spaces that prisoners cannot stop on. The rules change as inmates make their way from the depths of the castle to the outer countryside, with players whose pieces are arrested outside the inner courtyard having to discard precious equipment.Any number of PoWs in a team may be moved to the total of the throw; e.g. a throw of 8 entitles the Escape Officer to move one of his men 8 circles or one 3 circles and another 5 circles, or any other combination he wishes. This new version, which allows you to play the game on Windows, Linux, macOS and PSP platforms, has been reverse engineered from the original Amiga game engine and is released under a GPL v3 license.

by placing one PoW in each of the rooms containing the symbols Disguise, Compass, Food and Documents. When the PoWs are in position simultaneously the Escape Kit Card may be claimed. PoWs in cells, safe areas (marked blue), tunnels or outside the entire castle walls or wire are not required to attend Appel. Escape from Colditz remains a fun and fascinating – if unforgiving – way to understand and appreciate an important real-life event. The mechanics may be a tad dated, but this set is a loving tribute to an iconic British board game, which is sure to help it stand the test of time. The Colditz Game Board is based on a true plan of Colditz Castle, but adapted to provide all the necessary rooms on one level. It consists of the Inner PoW Courtyard, coloured grey, and the outer Garrison Courtyard known as the Kommandantur. Guards posted on the route of the Staff Car must stand aside. No pass is required at the main gate.

Designed by Major Pat Reid, one of only a handful of prisoners-of-war to escape Colditz Castle, and screenwriter Brian Degas, Escape From Colditz is the iconic game of careful planning and nerves of steel. Now, Osprey Games has published a new edition of the title to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the real-life breakout next year.

The original game, created by Mike Halsall and John Law (with intro music by Bjørn Lynne), was published in 1991 by Digital Magic Software. Because the game is a simulation of conditions in Colditz it is virtually impossible to prevent a number of successfull escapes being achieved. In a typical game between six players, the PoWs will spend up to an hour collecting the equipment and escape kit necessary to make escape attempts; thereafter, escape attempts will be made frequently. The Escape Kit Card once obtained is held for the duration of the game and never surrendered. PoWs do not return direct to the Appel area after obtaining kit.
