She said: “I have many memories of the girls I’ve volunteered with over my years with Girlguiding, particularly those who have joined us very shy and have thrived during their time with us. It's how we create the right impressions and connect with the people who can make us stronger: our people, volunteers, partners, supporters and other organisations. Now the girl is in her 30s and, with the support of her mum, she still phones me and remembers who I am. There is still a long way to go, but I have seen so many girls with the right support fulfill their potential and embark on a life-changing path.

When she joined my unit she had a vocabulary of five or six words, poor motor control and functioned considerably younger than her age. Some girls, the book explains, love arts and crafts while others are skilled in speaking out for others in difficult times.Le Hoai Thuong received a scholarship from The Asia Foundation, and throughout my 10 years leading our girls’ education programs in Vietnam, I have met so many amazing girls like her—from low-income families, who have lost one or both parents, or who are living with disabilities. Written in rhyme, it is a book about how girls can do anything from being an astronaut to a deep-sea diver and everything in-between.
