Example - every time Pat Kelly meets up with Danny “boy” we’re told how much Danny looks up to Pat an how he’s old school, around 10 times maybe more. The same with Margaret, yes ok we get it she’s a computer whizz kid but why does it have to be talked about 20 times ?!? Only read if you're way into violence and be ready to see assault, assassination, family murder and blah blah.. Character formation is way way idiotic and so the story formation. There he meets Jade an older woman, a woman who knows the business and helps him become the new face out there. For Aiden... its love at first sight. Mám rada príbehy z mafiánskeho prostredia. Ten svet ma niečím fascinuje. A Martina Cole mi jeden taký priniesla, i keď nebolo to celkom to, čo som očakávala. Príbeh bol totiž viac zameraný na rodinné vzťahy ako tie mafiánske, našťastie v ňom ale nechýbali rôzne mafiánske praktiky. I started by liking this book. I thought it had potential. A good little investigation. Oh! I was wrong.

This brings me on to my final point. The misogyny. This book is rife with it. Women in this book are only written as respectable on the condition that they do not wear makeup, are not sexually active beyond a rigid set of perimeters, and definitely do not have a facebook account. The vast majority of young women in this book are slated as disgusting wrongdoers who have made a huge mistake that will tarnish their name for the rest of their lives if, god forbid, they have consensual sexual involvement with a boy of the same age. The protagonist is disgusted with these girls' application of makeup as if these two are even correlated? It makes no sense what is inferred from these and related aspects in the girls lives, the views (along with the language) were archaic and did not fit; useless in the present day and the present book. It was worth the wait & I didn't see the twists & turns coming & getting to the end made me emotional for some reason. Character development. Rather than showing how and why her characters change, she just suddenly has them as different people. Now, I realize that she jumps forward in time four times in the book. That does not excuse her from not explaining why Breda suddenly loves her brother more than she loves her own son, especially when she said an irritating number of times previously that her son was the most important person to her and that he "meant the world" to her. She also had this infuriating habit of spending a chapter or two on a character and making that character seem important and then completely dropping said character from the plot never to return with nary an explanation to placate the reader. She lost her most interesting characters this way. All Reeva's children work for “the firm” - it is impossible, under Aiden's rule, for any of them to work honestly. The one exception is the youngest, Agnes. She is a good girl, beautiful and bright. She is devoted to her Catholic faith, and attends Mass twice daily. When Aiden finally marries and has a son, she devotes herself to looking after him, and seems not to want a life of her own.

I feel annoyed that I wasted my time and money on this apology for crime fiction. Oh the temptation of the station bookshop with a long train journey ahead. I couldn't understand the characters or the motivation behind their actions at all and I was simply bored through major part of the book. First read a Martine Cole book years ago when I waited at an airport. I could not put it down. After that I was addicted and have almost read them all. Reply

His is also very much a family man. He worships his old mum; he takes care of his siblings who help run his business empire in Southend; he dotes on his two young sons who will one day take over the reins. And then there's his wife and saviour Christine, whom he loves with a vengeance. As with Cole’s previous books, the chapters are fairly short and the style and flow of writing is easy to follow but it’s really just the same old stories and characters. Just started reading martina’s Books, I can’t understand why I have never read them before I absolutely love them what a brilliant writer. Reply I loved this book!! After her last few novels I was reluctant to buy this one, but I’m pleased to say she’s bang on form with this rollercoaster of a story!! Loyalty is everything and even more so when it's family, anything else will be the ultimate betrayalAnother romp through the East End of London / Essex world of gangster families and the urban crime realities they live in. This tale centres round a completely ‘straight’ law abiding, naïve and inexperienced, but infatuated and brow-beaten at home by a domineering mother, teenager marrying one of the most deadly criminals of his generation.
