The host Jim ‘The Poorman’ Trenton asked Gore if he was aware that it had been predicted that a crowd of ten thousand people would attend the event.

KROQ was broadcasting live throughout the event and they started passing on police warnings to their listeners. Produced by the band with the influential studio guru Flood and mixed by the legendary Fran ois Kevorkian, 'Violator' is viewed as a hugely groundbreaking body of work by countless musicians and DJs, such was its progressive synthesis of electronic, rock, dance and pop music. One aspect of this month's blog special that I'm particularly happy to share with you is that it will feature exclusive excerpts from Halo - The Story Behind Depeche Mode's Classic Album Violator, the book I have co-authored with Kevin May which is to released this May.

I've chipped in here and there and have been thrilled to have been involved in something that's subject is so close to my heart. I really liked the portions about the album in the context of changes in our part of the world in Central Europe after 1989. The event was broadcast live on KROQ with Richard Blade interviewing the band before the doors opened at 9pm. million copies, ‘Violator’ gave the British band the critical acclaim they finally deserved and spawned classic tracks such as ‘ Personal Jesus’, ‘ Enjoy The Silence’, ‘ Policy Of Truth’, ‘ World In My Eyes’, ‘Halo’ and ‘Waiting For The Night’. I have the theory that World Violation was as full of drugs as Devotional Tour but using different substances.

Written by uber-fans Kevin May and David McElroy, with ‘Halo’ we find ourselves shadowing the band in the studio, on an intense, pivotal worldwide tour and on the sets of arty Super 8 vignettes. When I read it for the 1st time, I thought immediately that it could be a fantastic contribution to Kevin’s project at that time.

The status of those shows fell into legend as a result of no officially sanctioned concert footage ever being released. Written by uber-fans Kevin May and David McElroy, with 'Halo' we find ourselves shadowing the band in the studio, on an intense, pivotal worldwide tour and on the sets of arty Super 8 vignettes. Finally, I strongly recommend listening to the conversation by Glen from Breathing in Fumes Podcast with Kevin and David, where we could find the North American perspective of the Violator. This period in the band’s history also found them forging a deeply trusted and influential partnership with photographer and designer Anton Corbijn, often viewed as the fifth member of Depeche Mode at this time. It is worth noting that by this time in their career, Depeche Mode were an established band, all aged in their late twenties or early thirties.

He first heard Enjoy The Silence in his parents’ car on a day when he was too lazy to walk to school and from that point he was hooked. We would have fiddled around with that sequence for a while, tweaking the filters and envelopes within the ARP until we arrived at that particularly hypnotic end result. The book is written very well in terms of technique and 4-5 hours of communing with the item pass quickly.

Although best known for ‘Enjoy The Silence’, ‘Personal Jesus’, ‘Policy Of Truth’ and ‘World In My Eyes’, the album featured some of DEPECHE MODE’s best work. Therefore, the timing of the release of this book couldn’t be better, with all eyes are on the band again, but no new material forthcoming for a few months. This period in the band's history also found them forging a deeply trusted and influential partnership with photographer and designer Anton Corbijn, often viewed as the fifth member of Depeche Mode at this time.

Some of the people I spoke to were François Kervorkian who mixed the album, Andy Franks who was involved in the tour, Neil Ferris who was the chief plugger and engineers from every studio they worked in during that period, including two from the Milan sessions; the latter were very funny and informative on some of the things that went on. The perception of a work of art that is a piece of music changes over the years, sometimes to such an extent that we lose the original understanding of a recorded piece or other artistic work. The band would rarely conduct interviews as a four-piece, primarily to save time rather than (at this stage) because they'd fallen out with one another.
