The moon standing out allows for the reader to make the connection that the moon appears wherever you are on Earth. Through this activity, students would be making inferences based on the pictures as well as practicing seeing from multiple perspectives. We see that in the context of strikingly different lifestyles, remotely different countries, landscapes, differences of clothing and all, the families are essentially the same. The clothing they wear and the food they eat may be different, but both begin the day by dressing, and by having the breakfasts prepared by their mothers. On the Arabian side, a family travels through the desert on camel, avoiding the hassle of traffic and construction altogether.

Pictures that cleverly fold out from each side eloquently reveal the external differences and inner parallels that constitute their lives. Meanwhile, in a small village in Morocco, a boy and his family go through their own morning routines and set out to a bustling market. I was fascinated by the peaks of the hoods, which sometimes stand pointed straight upright, or they’ll permanently flop in various ways to one side or the other, backwards or forwards.A powerful book, Mirror illustrates how our lives reflect each other and that we are all, even in some small way, connected.

Here I mirror an equally arduous journey, as father and son, travel in their yellow van, through the torturous Sydney traffic, with all its traffic jams, turmoil, obstructions, delays, rules, speed cameras and unpredictability. It’s at this point that I start work on the final artwork (the collages) for the book, though I’m still working at, refining and developing the ideas and images in the book right until the very last opportunity, before it is photographed for reproduction. The collage illustrations use a variety of materials: sand, earth, clay, paints, vegetation, paper, fabric, wool, tin, and plastic on a wooden base. Mirror creatively expresses the similarities that humans share, despite difference of culture, race, or geography.

Although the illustrations are more traditional, the contrast between the two cultures are striking. The essential story is conveyed wordlessly, while the short introduction and author's note appear in both English and Arabic. When a visitor enters the exhibition room space, they can choose to walk to the left or the right to view the works. I decide to stay in Hadida the following day and explore the gorge more slowly and try to meet women weavers in the villages. There is a lot of communication between me and my British editor and designer, and as with this book, its usual for them to question various details and see ways in which I can communicate my ideas more effectively. Having kids thinking of that on their own I believe will open them to thinking about life outside themselves and what they are used to. Designed to be read side by side—one from the left and the other from the right—these intriguing stories are told entirely through richly detailed collage illustrations. Jeannie Baker was able to mirror the lives of Americans with the lives of the Arab people in an insanely unique way.
