Description

From the process of analysis, the responses to the interviews were grouped into three main areas: musical resources; recorded music from audio and mixed-media sources; and singing and song repertoire. The thesis investigates the musical behaviour and development of young, pre-school children of the Chinese diaspora in London. UK mothers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds described similar musical shared activities with their toddlers (Young 2008a). The project was co-produced in that all project partners contributed to the development of the project aims and objectives and were involved in data collection, analysis and dissemination.

We conclude that while there were many positive outcomes, we recognise the challenges of sustaining and nurturing the confidence of practitioners and the desirability of addressing the organisational aspects of the initiative to promote the embedding of practice. Musical engagement is analysed with respect to various child, parental and family characteristics, including parental education, socio-economic status, and parental knowledge of and appreciation for the arts. g., children's songs, counting songs, and nursery rhymes), improvising songs to accompany everyday routines, dancing, playing musical (including toy) instruments, and listening to recorded music [34][35]. Subsequently, four individual children from three families were selected for case study analyses, and these were compared with the dataset of the other participants to gain a comprehensive picture.

Participants were asked to “perform” the music to express basic emotions that were (1) positively or negatively valenced and (2) high- or low-arousal (joy, sadness, peacefulness, and anger). These findings, consistent with theories of the psychological functions of music, in general, and infant-directed singing, in particular, demonstrate the everyday nature of music in infancy. Results indicate that mothers sing a broad range of lullabies utilising a repertoire of between five and seven lullabies.

Recently, day-long at-home recordings have shown that infants are frequently exposed to live and recorded music, that the distribution of sources of music input is not uniform, and that critical features of music input impact singing development (Costa-Giomi and Benetti, 2020; Mendoza and Fausey, 2021a). From about 9 months of age, Western infants experience music from new technologies as well as from interpersonal interactions (Young, 2008). Six years on, we reflect on the project and consider the significance and sustainability of what might have been achieved.

However, performance on the synthesized materials was correlated with performance on the original materials. Además, la visión positiva que los padres tienen sobre esta formación musical parece estar relacionada con la frecuencia en la que padres e hijos interaccionan musicalmente. These investigations assert that singing promotes intimacy between a mother and her infant, strengthening their bond and nurturing their relationship. The present article offers an overview of themes found in these studies about how mother-infant relationships may be mediated by maternal song, prioritizing articles that offer psychological insights into this phenomenon. In the survey, 72% of parents reported that their under-threes accessed musical/ audio play apps, and from the case study data, it can be anticipated that some of this was co-use with parents.
