This is a big one. You don’t want to spend good money on a nice looking pair of edging shears only for them to start falling apart after a month. Brands like VonHaus, Draper, Wilkinson Sword, and others are usually trustworthy when it comes to building solid tools, and if there is a problem, these brands will nearly always have a guarantee that covers a replacement for you. Best edging shears in the UK Even after mowing your lawn from top to bottom, the edges can still look a little wobbly and untidy. Edging shears have been of great importance to people who are interested in gardening. Maintaining your garden or lawn can be a tough task, especially if you have to reach into the areas where your lawnmower refuses to go!

If you want to prune your trees, then a pole pruner is the best tool. The long handle allows you to reach branches from the ground, without needing to use ladders. Another excellent feature of Fiskars servo system edging shears is the ability to rotate the blades 360 degrees so you can always get the angle that you need. You can also adjust the angle of the blades in relation to the handle so that it runs straight down and not perpendicular. This would be helpful for trimming some particularly tight spots. At the ends of the handles are rubber foam grips with ribbed and curved sides so that they fit in the hand more naturally and also provide better grip and prevent slipping once you start sweating. I found these grips comfortable enough and they certainly didn’t leave me with any blisters after using these edging shears for a while, but I do have fairly tough old hands.

Household

So how do I make my edging shears last a lifetime? Well there’s Winter care and how you put them away for the four or five months they don’t get used, steel quality of the blade, handle material, and then the quality of the fixing holding the blades together.

For this scenario, you’ll be wanting some grass shears. These are especially useful in medium to large gardens, but can also come in handy in small gardens too. They are also called loppers and are ideal for any plant with a diameter under 2 inches. They are basically bigger pruning shears with longer handles. It’s worth nothing that you would do well to lean your blades after every use, but the reality is in my home, that just doesn’t happen. So the best thing is to make sure that you have a can of WD-40 on hand, or some decent oil. Keeping the blades oiled through Winter will save you rust and clean up come Spring. Sharpening your blades is generally easiest with a file. I put mine in a vice and use some high grit sandpaper. After, oil them up and this will keep the rust away and useable for years to come. This chap is well worth watching, his video is excellent and although these are standard shears, the method is exactly the same. The cost of the return of any faulty goods will be borne by Keengardener. We shall be entitled to charge you for the costs of returning goods which are not faulty. Not sure which of the best garden shears to look for? The planting that you have in your garden will determine which type, or types, of garden shears you should add to your toolkit.Let you trim grass that grows up against obstacles, be this fences, fountains, pathways or bird baths.

These are currently priced sensibly and are easily the heavy duty commercial choice – they are a very good deal for such a well put together garden tool. It’s easy to tell the different between the two: lawn shears have blades that protrude out to the front, at roughly a 120° angle to the handle. Lawn edging shears have blades that face sideways, to make it easier to cut along the edge. When sharpening manual shears (not electric ones) you can also use sharpening steels or whetstones. These will usually require you to manually sharpen one blade at a time. The smooth cutting action combined with the soft grip handles makes them a joy to use and I expect them to last years. For most everyday pruning jobs, look for multi-purpose shears with 17 – 20 cm (7 – 8″) blades. These will generally cut through stalks up to 10 mm in diameter without being too unwieldy or heavy. If the overall length of the shears exceeds 60 cm, they may be too long to comfortably cut around smaller bushes.

Confusingly, there are similar products with very similar names from this brand, the only difference is the word ‘steel’ added between the Razorsharp and edging shears. If you have wooden handles, treat them with protective oil at the end of each gardening season. This will protect the wood and make garden shears last for a lifetime. Lawn edging shears are very low maintenance, but most will still require sharpening every once in a while. Before you begin, assess whether you are comfortable to sharpen the blades yourself. Shear blades are sharp and could cause serious injury if not treated correctly. If you have any doubts, take them to a professional. We deliver to most Home Hardware Stores. I imagine many of us will have experienced the difficulty of trying to trim a hedge that has some branches lying frustratingly just out of reach. If this happens a lot in your garden, these Wilkinson Sword Telescopic Garden Shears will certainly come in handy. Thanks to their telescopic handle, these hedge shears offer a lot of flexibility in their length, making it easier to reach awkward spots when hedge trimming.

This is good to look out for. Whilst cheaper shears can be tempting, untreated metal blades made from poor quality steel won’t cut as fluidly. You may find you’re having to work harder than you would if the blades were better quality.
