Description

Teaching kids how to code is so important and Osmo Coding with Awbie is a great introduction for kids. Children interact with the screen by manipulating tangible blocks of code within the “viewing” area of the Osmo Reflector. Depending on the information you provided, we may ask a few additional questions or provide you with some information of our own. This is one of the main reasons I feel like coding needs to be introduced to children at such a young age. Players snap together Coding blocks to create unique musical Jams, across over 18 different unique and exciting worlds.

Coding Awbie uses a levels-based game to teach kids how to make use of Algorithms, Sequences, and Decomposition. But I didn’t love that it just involved staring at the screen, and didn’t involve a ton of creativity. Designed for ages 5–10, Coding Starter Kit builds coding skills in progression with 3 hands-on learning games.

The apps we loved the most were the ones that required you to really engage with both the physical part of the game as well as the screen. Was it actually a tool that encourages learning and logical thinking, or was it just a gimmicky gaming app? Osmo’s Coding Awbie uses several of the Basic Coding Concepts that are useful for children of any age. Well, Osmo has other coding activities out there, like Osmo Coding Awbie, and it is just as wonderful and educational.

The Osmo Coding Kit received a lot more playtime than both my son or I thought it would and both he and I agree it would make a great gift for kids who enjoy playing games online — which honestly, at this point, is most every kid I know. We started on the easy level, but as you keep progressing the puzzles become more difficult and require more thinking. Before you begin playing this game, make sure to explain to your child about the basic steps for cooking the dish, along with the ingredients required to make it. All you have to do is guide your animated friend using tangible coding blocks to collect as many strawberries as possible! While we teach our boys to treat what we own carefully, I love when something is durable and feels like it will actually hold up to normal wear and tear. The tactile nature of this game and that it is very literally “hands-on” is so very different from many things today that are entirely online and really stood out to both of us. As a kid, I never thought of things like coding, and had no clue how much computers would evolve in such a short period of time. Fresh, hands-on content keeps your child engaged while they build 1st and 2nd grade maths curriculum skills in an expansive and magical world. We haven’t bought this one yet, so I can’t speak to the quality, but it’s on one of my kids’ Christmas lists.
