Description

Pippa Goodhart's interest in children's books was originally sparked by a Saturday job at Heffers in Cambridge when she was at school. However, in the process of cooking, her chapatti rolls away from her, and so she chases it through her neighbourhood. It is always good to have books that contain characters that look like you or mention things that are part of your culture. My little brother enjoys having this read to him and the story is nice to read to yourself or out loud to others because of the rhythm and rhymes. The story is about Mrs Kapoor, lots of animals (including a mouse) and her friends who chase after a chapatti that has escaped from her kitchen.

There are lots of bright and colourful pictures showing the trail of the chapatti as it bounces through the town past all the people and animals. They could make links to the Gingerbread man and the Run Away Pancake whilst enjoying the preparation of an Indian feast. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It’s an engaging story that explores and morphs the modern western world to the traditional South Asian cultures, especially through food. We chose it because there aren’t that many picture books that have Indian characters or topics so we were pleased that it is an enjoyable story to add to our collection.Follow the trail of the chapatti as it bounces and bursts through the book -- where will its adventure end? She studied Illustration at Exeter College of Art and has published a number of picture books, including Sam's First Day (Mantra 2000) and Buri and the Marrow (Mantra 2000).

Chapatti Moon would be great to read in a class with children of SouthEast Asian background, as it could allow them to be experts amongst their peers in terms of talking about the food or clothing of Mrs Kapoor.

Mrs Kapoor and a whole host of animals and friends give chase to a cheeky chapatti in this hilarious modern take on the runaway pancake story. Chapatti Moon by Pippa Goodhart is a fantastic folktale that is a great alternative to The Runaway Pancake for Pancake Day in EYFS or KS1. It also promotes a sense of community and encourages the idea that society should be dependable upon and reliable for each other.
