Description

This was one of the many hits recorded at a location that was known in the 1960s as Gold Star Studios (which is not the same as the LA studio of the same name); it later became known as SugarHill Recording Studios and was located in Houston, Texas. Other hits recorded in the "She's About a Mover" studio included "Treat Her Right" by Roy Head & the Traits, "Funny" by Joe Hinton, and "Turn On Your Love Light" by Bobby "Blue" Bland. On November 23, 1999, Sahm's funeral took place at the Sunset Memorial Home in San Antonio. [97] Loudspeakers were placed outside of the funeral home for the service to be heard by the estimated one thousand mourners in attendance. According to the Austin American Statesman, the crowd consisted of people "across all lines of age, race and social standing". [98] The viewing lasted an hour and a half, as the mourners passed Sahm's casket and left keepsakes. Freddy Fender chose not to attend the funeral to avoid distracting the crowds with his presence. [98] Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, [97] then-Texas governor George W. Bush and Willie Nelson reached out to the family to express their condolences. [99] A planned tribute by a local radio station had to be called off, as the viewing took longer than expected, and the station's programming moved to the broadcast of the weather report. [100] Sahm was buried in a private ceremony at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio, next to his mother and father. [100] [1] Jasinski, Laurie (2012). Handbook of Texas Music. Johnny Perez owned Topanga Skyline Studios, with “the Vibe and the Magic of the ’70’s.” Skyline’s grand woodwork, welcoming business culture, and “western fort” dirt courtyard set the stage for drummer Perez to mentor and inspire generations of young artists – until his death on September 11, 2012 at the age of 69, in a California hospital, from complications of cirrhosis of the liver. The suggestion that the couple in the song are stopping to make love in a park in Mendocino was a bit scandalous for some DJs in 1968-69. But, it is still frowned upon when it shows up – even in 2021.
