As the sun comes up the next day, teenager Nessa Crowley is found dead outside the house and all eyes are on the Kinsellas. Biography: Louise O'Neill is the feminist powerhouse and outspoken voice for change whose novels Only Ever Yours and Asking for It helped to start important conversations about body image and consent.

I think O'Neill has developed a fascinating psychology in Keelin and told an important story about domestic violence while also weaving in a genuinely intriguing mystery. I also blame the book for making me a bit snarky while I read it, as I just wanted to read and read and not be disturbed.

Either there was the constant use of the native tongue or Keelin drifting off into fairyland, as she so often did. I read this accidentally in tandem with Lucy Foley’s The Guest List - both remote-island-based whodunnits, but they do have their differences. Over the past two decades, the bestselling author has been a carer three times: to her father suffering from Parkinson’s, to her widowed mother and presently to her mother-in-law, the exuberant Granny Rosie.

Her first husband inflicted terrible physical abuse throughout their marriage, until she escaped back to the small island community with her son Alex. Later, as the family gathers to watch the final documentary cut, nervously awaiting the fall-out on Twitter, Henry observes, 'It's the era we’re living in, you see. It was their house where the murder took place; their loud, drug and alcohol fuelled party that silenced Nessa’s last breath. Every moment of reading After the Silence is a visceral moment of feeling Keelin’s sense of swimming through lead. A fascinating thriller/mystery set on a remote Irish island - this is so eerie, engaging and upsetting, my favourite of Louise's books so far. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. Keelin Kinsellsa and her husband Henry live an enviable life in “the big house” on the island of Inisrún. Years later a documentary about the tragedy is on the cards, threatening the fragile peace that really was never that peaceful.

I liked the idea of the true crime documentary but I think I would have perfered if the whole book was written in interview transcript. She was vulnerable, and scared, but I also couldn’t figure out whether she was involved in what happened to Nessa, or at least knew what had happened to her. After the Silence alternates chapters between Keelin’s perspective and transcripts of the interviews by the filmmakers. The harrowing subject matter of novels like Only Ever Yours and Asking for It have fuelled discussion around body image, consent, and the complicity of society and social media in the suffering of abuse victims. She uses the redemptive power of language to lift the silence that is rape’s legacy and to promote an understanding of the stigma that haunts rape’s survivors. From an early age, we teach girls—intentionally and unintentionally—that their beauty is tied to their self worth.

The only book i didn't like of hers was Only Ever Yours as i found it bland and difficult to follow. The murder is unsolved, and the islanders presume either Henry or Keelin responsible, although nothing has ever been proven. Apparently a fortune teller had predicted that her husband would only have daughters so therefore his birth proved that Keelin had been unfaithful to him. Our teachers always wants us to do certain adjustments after the first submission before our papers gets archived at the university. Evie always waited until Henry was in the room before she began the lecture on how her mother was destroying planet earth, and though her eyes never left Keelin’s, it was clear for whom the performance was really intended.
