Fit and style are down to personal preference, but the majority of walking trousers are styled on the looser side – when striding in the wilds or clambering up hills, you want to feel as comfortable as possible. And remember, you can tighten up the belt fastening on your trousers, but you can't magically make them bigger. Bright colours will make you stand out and the surrounding wildlife is likely to retreat into the foliage if it spots you. Brown, beige and green are good colours to opt for. Also, remember that bright colours will attract bugs and you definitely don’t want that! if you’re wearing neutral tones, you’ll have a better chance of spotting wildlife! It may be tempting to choose a raincoat with a funky pattern or bright colours, but insects are attracted to these colours so it may not be a good idea. Muted colours like greens and beiges are best.

You can buy specialist safari clothes that overcome these problems and, for once, I’d really recommend buying them instead of trying a DIY job. Recommended Safari Tops Craghoppers Nosilife Bayame Long Sleeved Top– these long-sleeved tops from Craghoppers are lightweight and slightly stretchy to keep you cool and protected from biting insects in the jungle. Ounce for ounce as warm as down, Primaloft microfibres are similar in size and shape to down, resulting in nearly equal insulating performance when dry and even better when wet. In recognition of SDP’s success, Keela was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation, one of the UK’s most prestigious awards, which recognizes outstanding achievement in the categories of international trade, innovation and sustainable development. Keela are grateful for the recognition of their innovations and continue to further develop System Dual Protection to ensure our customers know they can face the elements with confidence and in comfort. Think about your car windscreen on a cold day… fogging up due to the temperature difference between the inside and the outside here force ventilation is needed to clear the moisture.

Long trousers/pants

A head torch will be needed for night hikes. With so many scary creatures hiding just out of view, you don’t want to chance disturbing anything! Just like that, no waterproof garments breathe in wet or old conditions, no matter what marketing hype may tell you. Breathability claims can be made, but with the international test standards being set in dry conditions at 21°C and above, the results are far removed from the conditions in which we expect our products to perform. There are lots of different mosquito and insect repellent products available, but it’s widely said that those containing DEET are most effective in tropical areas. However, some research suggests that DEET can be harmful to those with sensitive skin, so it’s best to do our own research first. Allbirds Mizzles– These weather repellent shoes are super comfortable and feature a water-resistant coating called Puddle Guard to keep your feet dry in wet weather. With a Merino wool insole, your feet can get quite warm though in the rainforest! Read my full review of Mizzles here!

Even with long sleeves and trousers, it’s best to wear insect repellent on exposed skin. Those critters will always find somewhere to bite if you don’t!Long-sleeved shirts, t-shirts or tops are the first item in this list of jungle clothes for a reason! Rainforests and jungles are full of creepy crawlies and mosquitos that would love to prey on your arms. Sleeves will not only provide a protective barrier for these biting insects but also keep the sun’s rays from burning your skin. Its specially structured star yarn rapidly removes moisture away from the body, dispersing it over a large area for fast evaporation into the outside atmosphere, keeping you drier for longer.

When you travel, it is always good practice to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. The jungle can be a dangerous place at the best of times which makes travel insurance even more important. Good insurance will compensate you if you become a victim of theft, cover hospital costs if you get ill and repatriate you in emergencies. The insurer that I recommend and use is SafetyWing. It’s called the rainforest for a reason. Even if you don’t mind getting wet in the heat, you may wish to protect any expensive cameras or smartphones you have with you.For the same reason that long-sleeved tops are must-have clothes to wear in the rainforest, long trousers or pants will protect your legs from insect bites as well as creepy crawlies on the ground. Cropped trousers or shorts are pretty pointless, as it really is best to protect your whole leg. Nets are lightweight but they do add bulk to your luggage, so I wouldn’t bother if you’re only going to stay in top hotels. It is an entirely natural product that offers a unique level of comfort, look and feel as well as being windproof, highly breathable, very durable and quiet.

Because its individual fibres are water repellent, Primaloft retains much of its ability to keep you warm, even when moisture has soaked through. You can also buy hardshell walking trousers, which are hard-wearing and breathable, providing impressive protection from wind, rain and rough and tumble. These tend to be worn during winter or in environments when you’re susceptible to harsh weather and need a sturdy extra outer layer over your base layers. You can call us on a normal working day on 01562 863464 to upgrade to a special before 1.00pm next day delivery if required.Nosilife Ultimate Hat– with a full face mesh to keep the insects away, and a wide brim to protect your face from the sun, this isn’t called the ultimate hat for nothing! We offer next working day delivery, if placed before 1.00pm on our normal working days. Please call for costs. Nosilife Branco Trousers– The Nosilife technology in these comfortable walking trousers will keep your legs protected from the jungle critters, while the light material also controls moisture. Again, while your lower body does not feel the heat as much as your upper body, always consider women's safari trousers which are made from man-made fibres (such as polyamide) over those made from natural fibres (such as cotton). Women's safari trousers and safari shorts made from man-made fibres will also crease less and dry faster when you wash them on your safari and travels.
