But the problem is we are all human and when using autobiographical information, it should be taken with a heavy dose of salt. I don’t care who the subject is, very few people are completely objective about themselves. And that’s true for each of us when telling our own personal history whether it is written or oral. That is not unique to John G Lake it's just human nature to always tell our story in the most favorable light possible. And often we conveniently forget to include things about ourselves or our story that are not so flattering. The film's failure at the box office also caused Turner, who at the time was losing much of his wealth after the AOL-Time Warner merger and estimated his investment in the film to be worth 15 percent of his assets, to cancel his and Maxwell's plans to adapt the third book in the Sharaa family's Civil War trilogy The Last Full Measure. [4] [14] [13] Extended Director's Cut [ edit ] This may sound good and even humble but can ANY man actually measure himself in ANY way to Jesus? The only way to do this is to see ourselves as completely unworthy and not deserving of any power that God may give us and yet, this was a work Allen had to engage in to gain God’s power. Nonetheless, Ephesians 4:12-15 says that the Church was given to us: "To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ." So, in that respect, this is a less harmful statement but it is still not a requirement one must fulfill to obtain God’s favor or power. In Ephesians it appears to be a protection from deception.

William Branham is one of the most intriguing people in the book. It is the strange lights, the angel beside him, the paranormal picture, the vibrating hand. The supernatural surrounded this guy; and yet he wanted to teach. He felt, looking around him, there was not enough substance. Tragic. I believe had he gone about being taught in a proper way, God would have given him his heart's desire - to be a teacher. Unfortunately, in this area Branham was an idiot, from the Greek "idiote" —full of his own foolish thoughts. The picture with the anomaly over Branham's head is chilling. I would like to collect more on the life and ministry of Branham. My Uncle, The late Reverend Boyd McClaren traveled with A.A. Allen and W.V. Grant. He was Allen's morning speaker. He eventually left Allen due to his drinking. It is my opinion that Liardon does not have very good information pertaining to Allen's drinking. He downplays it, making it seem to be mostly a conspiracy against his ministry. Allen had quite a ministry, whether he was a raging alcoholic or no. From age sixteen, he has utilized every platform to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, bring maturity to the church, and encourage those in ministry. He has produced radio, television, and Internet programs, and has also authored more than eighty books, which have been translated into over sixty languages and to date have sold 16.5 million copies. The action sequences are well done, but they can't keep the momentum going. The film is badly fragmented and disjointed, and at 3 and a half hours, its horrible to endure. While some of the favorites from Gettysburg are in this (earlier period in the war) film, they have no chance to shine. I can't help thinking they ought to have spent more time with Robert Duvall's portrayal of Lee. Too bad. The Northerners, one Southerner explains, are mostly Republican profiteers who can go home to their businesses and families if they're voted out of office after the conflict, while the Southerners are fighting for their homes. Slavery is not the issue, in this view, because it would have withered away anyway, although a liberal professor from Maine ( Jeff Daniels) makes a speech explaining it is wrong. So we get that cleared up right there, or for sure at Strom Thurmond's birthday party. Past Winners Database". The L.A. Times. Archived from the original on August 15, 2007 . Retrieved September 19, 2023. The movie was filmed in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, western Maryland, and in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. [15] Actual historic locations in the film include Virginia Military Institute and Washington & Lee University, known as Washington College during the Civil War.

Years after the release of Gettysburg, a second film about some pivotal battles in the American Civil War was released by the same production team that made the previous film. However, where Gettysburg was a successful film in capturing the pivotal battle, and had some standout performances to lend a human view to the slaughter taking place, this film almost entirely fails on all counts. Marie Woodworth-Etter was portrayed as the most saintly person in the book. I believe it is for this reason that she held such influence on people—especially future ministers. The trance phenomenon surrounding her ministry is fascinating. I would like to find more books—and wow, would I like to find her own rare works which Liardon mentioned he has copies of! The extended director's cut was released for Blu-ray Disc on May 24, 2011. [20] The film also received special screenings across the country to commemorate the anniversaries of important Civil War battles, starting with a July 22, 2011, presentation at George Mason University to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the First Battle of Bull Run. the inaccuracies - while most of the story felt like it stayed true to the personalities of the historical characters, there were a few scenes that seemed to fictionalize it too much. Do you recall that old Sunday School song ‘I’m in the Lord’s Army’? Many will still remember the words they sang as a child though they are now adults! “I may never march in the infantry, ride in the cavalry, shoot the artillery, I may never fly o’er the enemy, but I’m in the Lord’s army!” As kids, we sang these words loudly, along with all the actions, eager to be on the Lord’s side. Every child has a God-given dream to achieve greatness and what could be better than being a general in the army of God?I am not a scientist or a medical professional nor do I play either one on TV. Even with my rudimentary knowledge of science I know Lake’s claims are ludicrous. Much more could be said about the whole process of using a microscope electronic or mirror type, to see bacteria and the protocol involved with how to prep slides etc. Another issue concerns the proper magnification needed to see bacteria which didn’t exist in Lake’s time. Amazingly, such simple facts elude Mr. Liardon. Although shorter than Gettysburg, tedious and boring are a good description. The dialogue is stilted and filled with speechy platitudes that its near cousin Gettysburg avoided, for the most part. The conversations are as if they were lifted from a wordy book, and are completely unbelievable, even considering the way people expressed themselves in the 1860's. Kathryn Kuhlman is contained within my mother's library. I'll have to investigate. Poor Kathryn finally rid herself of "man problems". I did not know that she had risen to such secular realms in the late 20th century. Those clips too would be interesting to dig up. What I have looked at, used and quoted from is volume I of Roberts Liardon series of books called “Gods Generals.” my comments concern volume 1 of this series only, God's Generals: Why They Succeeded and Why Some Fail. Gods and Generals' plays less like a movie and more like a three-hour-and-49-minute long lesson in Civil War history. Grueling and plodding, the film is almost the antithesis of `Gone With the Wind,' in that while both films are epic tales told from the viewpoint of the defeated South, `Gods and Generals' (unlike the earlier film) has been essentially drained of all emotion, drama and characterization. `Gods and Generals' may be a more `realistic' war film than `Gone With the Wind' (what wouldn't be?), but it's not nearly as entertaining.

What to know

A weakness I'd say has nothing to do with the author. I couldn't find many things as he was unbiased throughout. But it was interesting as most of the revivalists all had something to say against each other. Looking at Dowie towards Sister Etter was quite disturbing but also really interesting. Gods and Generals: Extended Director's Cut Blu-ray Review | High Def Digest". bluray.highdefdigest.com . Retrieved November 19, 2020. When my history professor gave me a list of books to choose from to read for his Civil War class, I chose this one on impulse. I came into the novel with very little knowledge about the events recorded in the book, but Jeff Sharra brought it to life for me. This book was given to me by a good friend, who was so sure i would enjoy as he had. Sadly, I felt it did not live up to my expectations of a good book on the American Civil War.
