RNS is not a disease, but a term used to describe a bacterial/fungal/viral infection with one or more of a wide variety of organisms. RNS can occur in any species, but is more prevalent in the Leopard tortoise. Leopard tortoises do not cope well with dampness/humidity, which may be why they are susceptible. RNS can occur at any time of the year, it is not a seasonal infection. It can be hard to spot in its early stages, and can become a recurring illness. If your reptile becomes infected it can become a carrier, easily spreading the infection to other reptiles, even if it’s not displaying any symptoms. Once a course of treatment is started, it should be completed even if the reptile seems to be better. Do not ignore a runny nose. Take your reptile to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a diagnosis and treatment plan. An untreated runny nose/infection could develop into chronic pneumonia, which can be difficult to cure. Sometimes RNS will be accompanied by stomatitis, which will require an additional treatment plan. Your reptile vet will be able to prescribe a course of treatment for stomatitis as well. In general, wound healing in reptiles may take longer than in mammals or birds, due to a lower metabolism. It is best to keep your injured pet in a sterile and clean environment. Put them in a hospital tank or quarantine, making sure it is the right size and the temperature and thermoregulation needs of the animal are satisfied. Put paper towels down and replace as soon as there is waste so no bacteria is bred in the environment. If your pet has deep cuts or you suspect a broken bone, take them to veterinarian. Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate): Prepare a warm bath, add 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 1 liter of water. Soak the reptile for 15-20 minutes to help loosen old, dry scales, unshed spine sheaths and any unshed scales around the toes.Heat lamps are available in pet stores and online. Some great choices are the Zilla premium reflector domes, Fluker sun dome, and Hoke flexible clamp lamp.
