Description

Since everyone imagines colours differently, connecting colours and clues has never been this much fun! Hues and Cues is a vibrant game of colorful communication where players are challenged to make connections to colors with words. They started placing their first cones and the questions immediately arose — the green of an avocado on the outside or on the inside once you cut it open?

Since everyone imagines colors differently, connecting colors and clues has never been this much fun! Thanks to the grid references, it is possible to play socially-distanced with one person managing the board. In many instances, these technologies are reliant on cookies to function properly, and so declining cookies will impair their functioning. This might not sound like a big deal, but the huge swathe of colours is really good at drawing people’s attention. After all players have had their turns as cue-giver (once or twice), the game ends and the player with the most points wins!

But then I drew my first card, chose a color I thought would work well, and then looked at the board and my mind went haywire.Maybe it was because we’d had a couple of drinks by this point, but a couple of people were crying laughing as he tried to explain why sandy had a greenish hue in his mind. Using only one and two-word cues, players try to get others to guess a specific hue from the 480 colours on the game board!

After this second pass, the cue-giver places the scoring frame on the board so that the target color is in the center of the scoring frame and players score points. When we first opened the game, read the rules, and sat down to play, we thought it sounded super simple. The clue you give cannot be a primary or ordinary colour word (yellow, blue, red, orange), but it can be a shade (violet, fuchsia, magnolia). The hilarity that ensues from some peoples’ clue-giving is contagious, and enough to draw anyone to the table. This latter rule keeps the role of cue-giver honest and removes the temptation for ultra-competitive players to get strategic with bad faith clues. We really like that the scoring frame has numbers printed on the edges so you can easily remember how many points you get for being inside vs adjacent outside the walls. For this second clue, we banned the use of words like light, dark and pale after someone followed the clue ‘poo’ with ‘darker poo’.
