The first time I owned it, I liked it. But I didn’t love it. At the time, I didn’t have many other watches to compare it to. Though I’ll must admit, I sometimes still wear the flimsy original bracelet on warmer days. It’s not the best quality, but light and comfortable enough for when it gets really hot out. There are some other options, though. I do appreciate craftsmanship and inginuity of many Swiss pieces, but like you said, as far as reliability and affordability, Seiko is hard to beat. Chris Van Hoven is a multifaceted writer with a keen interest in technology, watches, and the world of automobiles. When he geeks out about technical details and specifications, his enthusiasm for these subjects is contagious. However, in practice, it’s an excellent movement. The rotor action is quiet. Sure, you can hear it, but that’s that. A considerable advantage of this one is Seiko’s Magic Lever bidirectional winding system, first introduced in 1959. It’s simply a role model for winding efficiency. As someone I know spoke of the Seiko 5, you can just rest on the couch all day, and get up only when you need to, and it’ll still give that movement just enough motion of the rotor to keep it going.

The brilliant and rich sunburst grey dial looks really dynamic and with the all polished stainless steel case, the look really comes together to create the appearance almost of that of a Rolex Oyster Perpetual homage, but with enough unique design elements to stand on its own in terms of originality. Some say that the recessed crown is one of the 5 features, but since not all of them have it, I’d say that’s probably not the case. Anyway, whether or not these are the actual 5 features that Seiko had in mind when naming the collection, one thing is for sure: each Seiko 5 offers more than that. They always have tended to over-deliver. The included bracelet isn’t the best, but with a watch so affordable, it’s easy to overlook, and this watch looks good on a variety of different straps if you can work around the odd 19mm lug width. There are also some similar Seiko 5 variants you may want to consider if you’re already looking at the SNXS79. What I didn’t realize at the time was that a smaller watch is actually classier and more versatile, as it’s more subtle and discreet. Seiko is known for generally having very strong lume on their watches, but some of the Seiko 5 models fall short in this area.

On the applied hour marker indices and steel hands, you’ll find Seiko’s LumiBrite, which is Seiko’s new luminous material that is said to be brighter and longer lasting than conventional luminous paints. This helps you tell the time even when no light is available. Movement The Seiko SNXS79 has rather unusual dimensions that, on paper, don’t really reflect how the watch wears. Let me explain. Dimensions The crown at the 4:00 position certainly helps to add to the comfort, but I’ll admit, it’s such a tiny crown, it can be difficult to pull out and use. Thanks for a great, well thought out and honest review. I’ve just found your blog and I’m looking forward to reading more.

Seiko 5 is Seiko’s entry-level mechanical line of watches. They look great, have a robust in-house mechanical movement and are some of the most affordable automatic watches one can buy. The 7S26 has been recently discontinued – the entry-level Seikos are being upgraded to a day-date version of the 4R35 (aka NH35A), the 4R36. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing. The 4R series is better, but this also means an increase in prices. While an upgrade is a good thing, in this case, I’d go with the “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” credo. The dial For the money, I seriously doubt there’s any dial that comes even close to that level. And there probably isn’t. Availability It helps that it’s so light and weightless, making it good to wear in warmer summer months. It also surprisingly doesn’t tug on my arm hairs like some other cheap bracelets tend to. SNXS79 Strap Choices and SuggestionsMy story of owning this SNXS79 is a funny one. Like I said earlier, it was my own personal first mechanical watch I’ve owned for myself.

The crown is small, but given that the movement doesn’t hand-wind anyway, you don’t need a bigger one. While some don’t like the fact that it’s recessed, it does wear comfortably. There’s just no way for it to dig into your wrist.

Sorry for the late response but WOW, thanks so much for sharing that story! It’s absolutely awesome that your father’s Seiko stood the test of time, though, can’t say I’m entirely surprised!
