When I say that this is a good entry level spiced rum, I really don’t mean that in a negative way. Far from it. This is a rum that pretty much anyone can enjoy. It’s light, spicy and ever-so slightly sweet on the nose with a vanilla-like creaminess that’s reminiscent of a good cream soda. I get notes of demerara sugar – not the dark, rich kind, definitely the lighter, golden version. There’s fudge too, and traces of nutmeg, or maybe that’s cinnamon, whatever, it works (this is what happens when I close my eyes and allow my mind to drift to my Caribbean roots!)

Shake ingredients over ice and double strain. Serve in a chilled martini glass, garnish with an apple fan. The Details It looks good in the glass with a lovely sunshine gold colour, has a smooth creaminess with hints of vanilla on the nose and is enjoyably full in the mouth. The vanilla’s there in the taste too, along with some cinnamon, ginger and something that reminds me of a rich sherry. There’s a subtle bite in the finish but overall it still retains a nice smoothness. As for the taste, yup, that vanilla is there alright, lending an agreeable sweetness. Then things get a little bitter – almost like burnt caramel – at the finish which comes a surprise. It goes down smoothly though, which is the main thing and tastes equally good over ice or given length and an extra hit of spice in the suggested serve with ginger ale. Mr G
