Description

An FCU (fused connection unit) does more than just connect wires together. They're used where a fuse and cordgrip are needed, ie when connecting an appliance flex to fixed wiring. As a senior development engineer in the then fledgling London Underground Fire engineering department. I was specifying MICC and accepting the 150 stations we had to wire in just over 1 year with fire detection systems using MICC as the power and communication detection highway. You take the two stripped ends of wire, insert them into the cone, and twist. The wire nut will, in fact, allow grossly mismatched wire gauge, a mix of solid-core and multi-strand wire, and allow you to join two, three, or even four wires. Provided that the bared portions of the wires are within the insulated cone, there is complete isolation. However, the joint itself is not very strong and tugging can cause it to come apart, which means that you should consider if mechanical stress is likely to occur in your application. On the plus side, it can also be unscrewed to allow for modifications. Screw terminals, as individual connectors to a board at left, as a barrier strip with setscrews at top, and as a barrier strip with attached spade and loop lugs at bottom.

Fire prevention, Outside part have used Flame Retardant Plastics protective plastic, effectively reduce fire risk. Anyone familiar with automotive wiring will know about spade terminals (Figure 3). These terminals are crimped onto a stripped piece of wire. Unfortunately, I fear that the topic of in-line connectors is far too large for me to cover here, and so I have somewhat imperiously deemed it off-topic. Wire nuts Small diameter flexes and some cordgrip designs result in the plug cordgrip failing to grip the flex. This can be remedied by putting the flex 360 degrees round the cordgrip before tightening, like so: Sometimes, you want to connect several different circuits, and in such a case, you may opt to go for in-line connectors, such as the one shown in Figure 1.A 3M Scotchlok Got to say I have only ever use these on low voltage car electrics and they are great for patching the trailer wiring on the car wiring loom. For house wiring I tend to consider them in the same frame as wire nut. For all of the fancy connection options that I have presented above, I would say that the wire nut rules by a wide margin. Now, it’s your turn to share all of the different ways that you use to connect wires. Just because you can connect two wires together, it doesn’t mean that you should, but if you need to, then here’s how. As acceptance engineer I felt I should be able to terminate the MICC myself if I was going to downgrade or condemn an installation.

Because they use the same insulation color coding and crimping tools as spade terminals, butt-splice connectors (Figure 5) often appear in the same manufacturer’s series as spade terminals. The aforementioned butt-splice connection is forever. However, there is a cross between the butt-splice and flying blade approaches that is often referred to as a “bullet” connection (Figure 6).

The Terminal strips can be easily cut with utility knife or scissors to your desired strips or to create your custom sections. Depending on the design, a flat-blade screwdriver, a cross-blade screwdriver, hex key, Torx key, or other tool may be required to properly tighten the connection for reliable operation. MICC It was the only truly fire surviavble cable available just after the London Underground Kings Cross Fire.
