House of Suns is both hard SF and epic space opera, combining two of my favorite kinds of sci-fi, but despite the vast distances and time periods spanned by the novel, it never quite lived up to its epic potential, in my opinion, and that's even when considering the ending. Despite the resulting intimidating presence, they are nothing but affable and cooperative during Purslane and Campion's visit.

Mechanical Lifeforms: The Machine People, a race of human-looking androids with a little bit of clockwork features thrown in for flair. This book is filled with inaccurate memories: “strands to edit, memories to delete, others to falsify”. Ancient Conspiracy: The House of Suns is one, being formed by the Line members responsible for the creation of the virus that wiped out the First Machines.

Before preparing to depart Andromeda to follow its kin, the First Machine tells Campion that Purslane and Hesperus barely survived the passage into Andromeda. Next Reynolds is most likely Terminal World, as a friend recommended it to me, although it might end up being Inhibitor Phase depending on when I pick up the paperback! However, Reynolds does such a good job overall that it is easy to forgive this small aspect - a stunning and extremely enjoyable book! One day, I couldn’t find them in in the supermarket, so asked a nearby member of staff where the King Flakes were. Humanity, fearing this trope, created a virus which infected all the robots with a kill-switch, to be used only in case humanity felt it needed to be. Faster-Than-Light Travel: Humanity never broke the light speed barrier, and all travel has to be done STL, with everything that implies. One major selling point is the feeling of deep time: the lifetime of a shatterling stretches into millions of years, and a typical journey through space can take thousands of years. Un)profound thoughts on genre: every genre has its icons, and Reynolds seems to be one of science fiction's favorites, with at least sixteen books and many, many, more shorts and novellas.

Set Six million years in the future, this story is set in a universe vastly different than anything you have ever read before. This is an approach that works well, and is obviously quite freeing for Reynolds – he gets to sprinkle the astrophysics liberally across a boundlessly imaginative sandbox, essentially. The characters are just as bland as their dialogue, with motivations and loyalties that are either cliched or bewildering. Its power makes you feel as if you are in that world, living the experiences of the characters and feeling their emotions. Sci-fi is commonly castigated (perhaps unfairly) as overly masculine in terms of authors, readers, and the characters within. One of Reynolds´single novels, it deals with immortality, childhood trauma through alternative upbringing involving simulations and AIs, an option how conglomerates could evolve, machine intelligence in the form of old and new robots, a crime in the past, future torture methods, and thereby unites anything that makes Sci-Fi great.
