One character, a gray and white figure named Van, represents the BTS ARMY. Adopted by white settlers, "koala" became one of several hundred Aboriginal loan words in Australian English, where it was also commonly referred to as "native bear", [5] later "koala bear", for its supposed resemblance to a bear. [6] It is also one of several Aboriginal words that made it into International English, alongside e.g. " didgeridoo" and " kangaroo." [6] The generic name, Phascolarctos, is derived from the Greek words phaskolos "pouch" and arktos "bear". The specific name, cinereus, is Latin for "ash coloured". [7] Taxonomy and evolution Owen, R. Ensuring there’s the right kind of forest for them to return to is a priority. Though there are some koala sanctuaries and reserves, many live on private, unprotected land. There are conservation efforts by the Australia Zoo and others to buy large tracts of land to set aside for koalas, and state governments are also creating new koala reserves. Campaigns urging landowners not to cut down eucalyptus trees are also ongoing. a b Smith, M. (1980). "Behaviour of the Koala, Phascolarctos cinereus (Goldfuss), in captivity VI*. Aggression". Now they face serious threats from habitat loss. Land clearing, logging, and bushfires—especially the devastating 2019-2020 season—have destroyed much of the forest they live in. Koalas need a lot of space—about a hundred trees per animal—a pressing problem as Australia's woodlands continue to shrink. Clever koalas learn to cross the road safely". BBC News. 27 July 2016. Threats to survival

A potent anesthetic can be made by diluting Komala's drool. This anesthetic was used for surgeries in the past. The resting heart rate of a Koala is anywhere between 70-140 beats per minute (it will depend on a range of factors, including the age of the Koala). It can be difficult to measure a resting heart rate for a Koala as they have a ‘sinus arrhythmia’ which means that their heart rate and breathing get out of sync. This can cause fluctuations in the heart rate which aren’t a reflection of the actual heart rate–resting or active. Koala rib cage Females become sexually mature at about three years of age and can then become pregnant; in comparison, males reach sexual maturity when they are about four years old, [57] although they can experience spermatogenesis as early as two years. [21] :68 Males do not start marking their scent until they reach sexual maturity, though their chest glands become functional much earlier. [48] Koalas can breed every year if environmental conditions are good, though the long dependance of the young usually leads to year long gaps in births. [16] :236 Health and mortality Koalas are considered a vulnerable species. Their population was decimated from hunting for their fur during the 1900s, and koalas are still in danger from human encroachment upon and destruction of their habitats as well as disease. Chlamydia, which infects many koala populations, makes the female koalas infertile.

The koala is an iconic Australian animal. Often called the koala “bear,” this tree-climbing animal is a marsupial—a mammal with a pouch for the development of offspring. One of the powerful things about working with koalas … [is] they are a good flagship species, because they utilise such a range of different eucalypt habitats," she says. Koalas are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, which has named the species one of 10 animals most vulnerable to climate change. Increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is decreasing the nutritional quality of eucalyptus leaves (which is already quite low) and causing longer, more intense droughts and wildfires. In response to drought, koalas are forced to stop napping and come down from the trees to find water, spending precious energy and putting them at a higher risk of predation.
