The extra money will go towards extensive advertising and marketing, maintaining and the continued development of this platform. Diman continued: “We know that there are some very hateful groups like Students Against Tyranny that are planning to arrive, and this is something that has happened in Oxford before.”

He insisted that his use of such language was to describe the “public display” of sexuality “in front of children”.Varied, themed outreach based on or near the A580 East Lancashire Road (west of Manchester; east of the M6) into Salford and Manchester plus surrounding roads including the A6. How did Hans define “loyalty”? How did other young Germans whose stories you read in this chapter define “loyalty”?

On the 13th September 2021, after seeing his success, UNN (Unity News Network) anchor, David Clews, arranged for James to come on his live to do an interview about his plans for Students Against Tyranny, in the live one of those plans discussed was to have Student Representatives, an idea which, for the most part, they have succeeded in. [4] Students Against Tyranny have so far got 47 Student Reps in universities stretched across the UK. [5] Not too long after this, an article was written about James by Wales Online, though they didn't mention him by name. The article was titled "University of Wales Trinity St David's warns that students spreading Covid misinformation could face disciplinary action". [6] The article states that the first year student has started a group "urging those aged between 15-21 to not get jabbed" and that the university "condemns" the actions of this student and that people should get "vaccinated." James later responds to this article by saying that he's not "antivax" and that he's instead "pro medical choice." During our discussion he said: “Free speech doesn’t come without responsibility. If you’re going to say something that will wind someone up or aggravate them – then you should expect a proportional response.” Above: A supporter of SAT holds up copies of The Light, a Germany based publication that promotes conspiracies and has links to far-right groups such as the Reichsburg movement. The paper has recently been the subject of a BBC Radio 4 series called ‘Marianna in Conspiracyland’)

With several pro-LGBTQ+ community organisations already supporting the Oxford Trans+ Pride protest, the goal for organisers is to turn it into an annual event.

The film and TV student made headlines in his first year after his university warned students spreading Covid misinformation could face disciplinary action.

Once receiving the results from his transfer interview, they had apparently failed him on a technicality. Because of this, he’d asked if he could look at what other fellow students had done, so he could find out what he missed. This is how he found out he needed the literature review. John then resubmitted the transfer report, which you’re entitled to do. The person marking his report then said “yep, that’s perfect, you have the required sections in there and everything’s good” and thus John had passed. Because of this, another disciplinary had been launched against John, but this time at a way higher level… taking place at the uni level rather than the school level. While Christian was in front of the disciplinary panel, he explained that his social media activity was just being used as a way to dismiss his own complaint, which a few on the panel fortunately sympathised with. They ended up not taking action against him and instead told him to just watch what he posts on social media as it could offend someone. He was also required to do community service in the library. Let me remind you that this was entirely over what he posted on his OWN PERSONAL social media in his SPARE TIME. I asked Shaw how he felt about the University of Manchester’s treatment of rent-striking students and their freedom of expression – arguably one of the most prevalent free-speech issues facing students here at the moment. He informed me how they had previously booked one such speaker for a previous protest, Katie Fanning, before cancelling her appearance after discovering her political affiliations.

A spirited counter-protest by the Manchester Anti-Fascist Collective, Manchester Leftist Action coalition and various workers’ unions outnumbered the SAT supporters. This incident occurred in 2016, a year marked by significant political events such as Brexit and the election of Donald Trump. Unfortunately, these events seemed to have had a significant impact on the treatment of free speech in universities. Many higher learning institutions suddenly shifted to becoming Marxist indoctrination camps where students were no longer encouraged to engage in debate but were forced into one way of thinking. But some time later a peculiar change took place in Hans; he was no longer the same. Something disturbing had entered his life. . . . His songs were forbidden, the leader had told him. And when he had laughed at this, they threatened him with disciplinary action. Why should he not be permitted to sing these beautiful songs? Only because they had been created by other peoples? He could not understand it, and this depressed him, and his usual carefree spirit began to wane.

They confront the manager who listens to their concerns. She can be heard offering to remove the product from the shelves. We think there will be some threats in that way, but we are working with the police… we’ll have dozens of people there to keep it a safe situation, we’ll have first aid and field support to offer any kind of support. The protest featured a mixed bag of opinions: everything from refugees, immigration and LGBT+ people to anti-vaccination and conspiracy theories. There seems to be a cognitive dissonance between the claims of taking “responsibility” for one’s words and then denying culpability in contributing to a hostile atmosphere. Seemingly very aware of the police presence, and as I found out from later conversations, informed by some unpleasant past experiences of ‘kettling’ (a police tactic used to contain protests) – the counter-protesters eased the pressure and slowed the pace.
