And even when the truth is uncovered, what is revealed about her character still leaves us with a pretty limp and floppy impression.Maya Stern Burkett, the heroine of this stellar standalone from Edgar-winner Coben (The Stranger), has suffered more than her fair share of tragedy. Because of this, he comes off less as a sincere doctor helping the needy and more as a hypocritical asshole with a serious Messiah Complex.

I am not, perhaps, the best audience for twist endings - I very rarely like them - but if they're your thing then you'll probably enjoy these two thrillers. The characters are realistic, the plot well thought out and I liked the fact that the story is more about the characters than the police procedural aspect. While both the Myron Bolitar series and the standalone Harlan Coben books have their appeal, they do cater to somewhat different reader groups.
