The shaft is the area on the hook where the yarn loop is formed. What is the most comfortable crochet hook? The most comfortable hook is the one that feels best to you! This is akin to asking someone their favorite jeans or brand of soda! Everyone has her own favorite! Some people like ergonomic crochet hooks, aluminum crochet hooks or plastic hooks. Maybe you’ve noticed the same letter sizing on hooks of different measurements? I’m looking at you G-6 / 4 mm and G / 4.25 mm! It can be a bit confusing, especially if you’re a new crocheter! I even have one labeled G+! To further add to the confusion, not all hook sizes have the equivalent depending on which terms you use. For example, a size 4.5mm hook has no real American letter size (although some call it a G+), and is commonly referred to as a size 7 in both the US and the UK. Not to be confused with a 7mm hook, which does not have an American letter OR a UK number. Oy!
In the conversion chart below, we list the much more common EU Metric size as well as the older UK size. The UK sizes are being phased out, and are only really used in older crochet patterns anymore. I’ve put together a table below which is a useful reference to help you translate all the different hook sizes. It includes metric and those used in the US, UK / Canada and Japan. A comparison of metric, US and UK/Canada crochet hook sizesUse the chart to find the hook size called for by your pattern, and you will be able to identify the size (in mm) that you should use. We’ve covered a lot of ground, but there’s one last thing you need to know to keep your crochet hooks in tip-top shape. I think our crochet world would be a better place if we focused on two things in regards to crochet hook sizes. First, size is really a measurement, NOT a label. So instead of thinking of your hook as a letter (as we so often do in the United States), think of it instead in millimeters. That way, no matter the labeling or number system, we are all talking about the same thing: the size of our crochet hook. So it’s important to know the corresponding measurement in millimeters. This is the most accurate way to measure crochet hooks. My collection of Furls ergonomic hooks, which come in resin, wood and metal. How do you know what size crochet hook to use?
When buying the smaller sizes of hooks, especially the steel hooks used with crochet thread, look out for hooks with a larger ergonomic handle. Working with a very thin handled steel crochet hook for long periods of time can be uncomfortable. You may wish use hook sizes totally outside those suggested below to create different types of fabric. For example, I used a 6mm hook with a fingering weight yarn in my 1000 stars shawl which has an open stitch and tons of drape. American crochet hooks go by two names: a letter and a number. For example, the crochet hook size that is most commonly used for worsted weight yarn is an ‘H’, which is sometimes called a ‘size 8’. From an international point of view, this number is incredibly confusing! Most countries identify crochet hooks by their size in millimeters (mm). A size H crochet hook is 5mm, which as you can notice, doesn’t clearly line up with the number ‘8’. However, this confusing notation isn’t a problem if you reference a conversion chart when you are ready to crochet. Crochet Hook Conversion Chart
