The characters are definitely very frustrating – Janie’s turmoil sounded deep and complex on paper until you take a step back and it’s all WTF girl, why are you hanging out with people you dislike? Didrik is a 40-year-old media consultant whose misguided efforts to become the family hero render him a pathetic vision of masculine incompetence.

In Augustine's defence, he did come up with that to stop the early Christian Donatists killing themselves at the earliest opportunity to avoid sin and guarantee passage to Heaven. Your review was very pointed and brought out some interesting angles that I had not considered before. I’m super glad to writing is awesome~ It makes me kind of sad that the characterisation is eh though. Another theme throughout the novel is the human tendency to accept current circumstances and just endure. But even that anxiety faded, even that moment passed, and all that was left was the sum total, the numbers on the display, a figure that was slightly larger than the amount I’d paid for my first car. Melissa gets lost after venturing out of the apartment in the hopes of picking up a refill of her prescription. We kill it faster and faster by producing chemicals into the air and then worrying about the "end of the world" even if we knew it was going to happen sooner or later. Yeah I haven’t read any overwhelmingly positive reviews so far but I loved Falling Into Place so I really do want to give this one a shot. I love how you described her writing, “Her proses are simple yet lyrical, cutting you right to the bone with each sentence”.

They stay in the back of my mind so when I reach a point where I can weave them into the story, they're right there.

His bestselling biography about Vilhelm Moberg, The Man in the Woods, was nominated for the prestigious August Prize. Okay so I really feel like I would fall in love with Zhang’s writing, but the lack of characterization makes me EXTREMELY wary. Liljestrand gets in plenty of barbs at the various players as they cling to their old lives amid disaster.

As thrilling as Jens Liljestrand's account of the impending catastrophe is, his masterstroke lies, above all, in the choice of his antiheroes. I haven’t read this book but I’ve seen lots of mixed reviews so I’m a bit hesitant to pick this up because characters are the main thing that I always look forward to. Perhaps it was simply Zhang’s writing, but I found myself very caught up in each characters’ thoughts, especially Micah’s; I feel I related to him the most. She was born and brought up in Canton and since she is now stuck firmly in her past, it is a lovely book I can read to her and see her joy as we talk about places she remembers going as a child.
