Tenma brings a boy named Johan back to life, unknowingly resurrecting a monster from the brink of death who ends up throwing the world he knows into a cesspit of despair and chaos. This volume has everything good about this manga (so far): the side stories with people who get involved in the main conflict unwillingly (though they are not always innocent), the Jean-Javier fight between Tenma and Lunge, and Nina getting into action. It's rare that a story explores evil with such nuance and creativity, we see all aspects of human evil be laid to bare through this series without reservation, rather it be the casual indifference of Johan, the selfish opportunism of the neo-Nazis, or the banal cruelty of the scientists from Kinderheim 511.

This is certainly the most action-orientated the manga has ever been, in how it builds up to the moment where Tenma is about to take his first life, whilst the likes of Dr Reichwein, Nina and little Dieter are desperate to save Tenma from making a terrible mistake. Though the two men part without discussing what brought them together, Grimmer is also deeply interested in the same thing Tenma is looking for-511 Kinderheim, which once existed in East Germany. I adore the way Urasawa can intertwine secondary characters and side stories along Tenma's journey without losing tension. I really liked the Easter egg of the serial killer the psychologist is studying being modeled after Edmund Kemper, (Now Mindhunter). What brings this volume up to four stars from the original three I was going to give it is the characters.

Also, I am excited to know that Johan actually exists because if it was just a Tyler Durden case, I would have been pretty disappointed - well, again I am not 100% sure this is the case, but for all we know, Lunge is wrong and I am looking forward to seeing how he will react. With a stronger emphasis on action, Urasawa’s strength as an artist relies more on dramatic conversations, where he proves to be a master of illustrating facial expressions.

While they might seem frivolous at first glance, Urasawa always manages to find a way to weave them back into the main story somehow, where no detail is lost in the abyss. However, when Tenma is threatened by Roberto at the library, Tenma shoots Roberto out of self-defence without much thought. I really enjoyed this volume and was on the edge of my seat excited to find out what was going to happen next.I really thought that Kemp was Jurgen's abusive mother, but it seemed that Johan somehow got him to project his mother on Kemp? Rudi double crossing the police and the reveal regarding Tenma's opinion of him were such a huge relief, and the latter was even a comical one at that! Lunge's Expectations (ch 40) showed a more childish side of Lunge: one who was a bit more passionate and did a bit of roleplay as he tried to get into the headspace of the person he was investigating. Natürlich hoffe ich, dass er nicht stirbt, die Reihe hat es in sich neu eingeführte Charaktere schnell sterben zu lassen.
