As ever with an OLED TV, every pixel in the OLED807’s screen can produce its own light, delivering massive local contrast benefits over even the best LCD TVs. The OLED panel in the OLED807, though, builds on this by being one of the latest so-called OLED EX displays, meaning that it has the potential to produce as much as 30% more brightness than many previous OLED TVs. It's a big deal in these days where HDR video is so widely available. The inclusion of ALLM means the TV automatically switches to the low latency Game mode when compatible consoles are detected, and this delivers an input lag of 15ms. While not as low as some of the completion, it’s more than fast enough for all but the most demanding of gamers. There are actually two game modes: Optimal and Optimal (Auto). The latter mode allows you to enjoy the benefits of VRR. In terms of other gaming features, there’s support for HGiG and Dolby Vision HDR gaming, along with cloud gaming via Geforce Now.

Gamers will also be pleased to hear that unlike some Philips TVs of the past, the 55OLED807 keeps input lag low when running in its Game mode. Tests show a very respectable 15.1ms of lag with 1080p/60Hz sources, which more or less halves in 120Hz mode. Information about the maximum vertical viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. As with all of Philips’ current OLED TVs, the 55OLED907 is a gorgeous bit of kit. The frame around the screen is so skinny you can barely see it, and the set’s rear is incredibly slim – less than a centimetre – behind the top, left and right edges. Percentage luminance drop at 20 degree vertical angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white outputHowever, please note that the 48-inch OLED807 won't be able to match the same highs as this, because the panel can't get as bright at this size (it's the same for all 48-inch OLEDs) – this brightness applies to the 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch models. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying a live scene and white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits) Philips has got its Game preset input lag time down for the OLED807 to 15.1ms with 1080p/60Hz feeds. That’s still 5ms or so higher than the fastest results we’ve seen this year, but you’d have to be a more competitive gamer than us for 5ms to make a serious difference to your performance. The sharpness isn’t messed up by camera pans or fast moving objects, either, thanks to Philips’ excellent motion compensation processing. The ‘Standard’ setting for this that’s the default for some picture presets is too aggressive, creating too much soap opera effect (excessive fluidity) and too many unwanted side effects. Its Pure Cinema and Movie settings, though, both offer excellent options for taking the edge off hardware judder without the image starting to look unnatural or uncinematic. The OLED807 is Philips' top dog for 2022 (so far). It features an OLED EX display that promises 30% more brightness compared to a standard OLED, not to mention the firm's top picture performance and gaming features.

The 807 range consists of four models with 48in, 55in, 65in and 77in screen sizes available. The design is elegant and the build quality is impressive for the money, but only two of the four HDMI inputs support all the features found on the latest gaming consoles. There was a time when this sort of intense sharpness and detailing on a Philips TV might have felt forced and unnatural. Now, though, the quality of Philips’ picture processing is so good, especially when it comes to dealing with image noise, that you just feel as if the 55OLED907 is simply showing you more of the detail that’s actually in a source, rather than it just giving everything an artificial sharpness boost. The Philips 807 makes for an excellent gaming TV thanks to its support for 4K/120Hz high frame rate, ALLM and VRR – including Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium – although, as mentioned earlier, there are only two HDMI 2.1 inputs.The Philips 807 might use an EX OLED panel, but the claims of a 30% increase in brightness depend on what’s being tested. The 55in 807 hits 720cd/m² on a 10% window, which is fairly standard for an OLED, but also reaches 189cd/m² on a full-field pattern, which is an improvement and ensures the overall luminance of an HDR image looks brighter. For more details please visit: www.philips.com/TVRemoteapp. Philips also supports the HGiG system that lets you use set up menus built into your console to establish the best gaming HDR experience, rather than the TV trying to figure out on the fly how best to handle incoming HDR game graphics. Philips provides options in its huge onscreen menu system to tweak or turn on/off a vast range of picture processing elements. For the most part we welcome this, as it gives you lots of control over a welter of processing features that aren’t always as helpful as they think they are in their default settings. Be warned, though, that Philips’ setting generosity does create an intimidatingly extensive onscreen menu environment. The 24-inch 5537 is similar to the 6706 (above), except that it's not 'smart'. It does have a built-in digital tuner, though, plus a couple of standard HDMI ports. The 6th Gen P5 AI also allows users to toggle between Eye Care, Dark Detail Optimization or Colour Temperature Optimization modes. The company's 2022 OLED TVs also get a new version of AI Auto Film Mode, which provides seven smart picture modes including Filmmaker Mode. The 6th Gen P5 Processor also supports Filmmaker Mode. Designed in collaboration with filmmakers and studios, Filmmaker Mode lets you experience the cinematic vision, exactly as the director intended. Overriding the TV’s own motion and picture processing, Filmmaker Mode presents the correct aspect ratio, colour and frame rate – just as the filmmakers intended. Throughout, build quality is unarguable. Given the asking price, it’s no surprise to find a lot of plastic used in the 807’s construction, and in places it’s quite hard, ordinary-feeling plastic too. But everything is screwed together properly, nothing groans or creaks, and the way the stand has been chromed is flawless. For the money, it’s hard to know what else you can realistically expect. It’s well-populated with content these days, too, with the likes of Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Prime Video, and Netflix all present and correct. It’s still missing the catch-up services for one or two of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters, but Philips has covered that by also equipping the OLED807 with the Freeview Play app, which brings all the UK’s catch-up apps together into one easy overall interface. The rest of the colour palette is lifelike and convincing – and, to be absolutely blunt, much better judged and much less aggressive than we’ve become used to from Philips. There’s still intensity of tone when needs be, of course, but when it’s describing skin-tones (in particular) the 55OLED807 is more lifelike and convincing than the model it replaces. And this is true even if you’re using one of the more, um, vivid picture presets. New for 2022 is the Philips 9507. The company's high-end MiniLED TV features a 4K 120Hz refresh rate and HDMI 2.1 support that adds VRR (variable refresh rate) and a low latency mode. It sounds like a great option for gamers, but we look forward to confirming that later in the year. New gaming features Panel aside, the 9507's feature set looks to be almost identical to that of the OLED807: four-sided Ambilight, 70W 2.1 speaker system, Android TV 11 and full support for HDR (including Dolby Vision, HDR 10+ and IMAX Enhanced). You also get the top-of-the-line gaming features, including HDMI 2.1, VRR and auto low latency.

The 55OLED907’s single-chip processor actually yields a key gaming advantage over the dual-chip one found in Philips’ OLED937 flagship TVs, in that provided you set its picture preset to HDR Monitor rather than HDR Game, the TV will play 4K/120Hz sources in their full resolution, rather than showing them with a halved vertical resolution as happens with the OLED937. USB recording for digital channels only, recordings may be limited by broadcast copy protection (CI+). Country and channel restrictions may apply. It’s a pity that all four HDMIs don’t support the full array of cutting edge gaming features, perhaps, but at the moment, at least, there probably aren’t too many households out there with more than two gaming sources that actually need full 2.1 support to deliver their maximum performance.
