Description

If you’re a facility manager, contractor, or engineer looking for fire resistant paint for your facility, it’s best to consult a certified coatings supplier before you buy. To ensure fair pricing, we split colours into ‘Price Bands’ to group together similar priced colours. If you wish to search for the cheapest tinted colours, always select Price Band 1. Previous coatings that are blistering or unstable should be removed and a suitable stabilising or primer-sealer product used if necessary. Use Earthborn Isolating primer for dry stains and use two coats for heavy staining. Do not use on lime plaster/render as this can inhibit the breathable properties of the render. These intumescent coatings also offer fire resistance to structural steel exposed to cellulosic fire. Zeroflame, Jotun, Nullifire, Thermoguard, Bollom andMore

Fire-resistant paints work by creating a barrier against flames. Most of these coatings are intumescent paints, which work by forming a char layer on the substrate when met with flames. These paints are often applied to steel, timber, and plasters to avoid burning and destruction. This paint works by creating gas bubbles that strengthen the paint’s additives when met with flames. When used on steel and timber, the foaming char layer works to add time before flames can penetrate through the substance.Fire protection paints are the most common form of fire protection to steel, this is because of how widely available and cheap the products are. At International Passive Fire we have a whole department set up to deal with Specifications and Estimations for Intumescent Steel Paint. Our technical specification and estimating department consists of over 50 years of experience in the structural passive fire protection field and is completely independent of all manufacturers. Also, all of our work is free of charge (FOA).

Unprotected steelwork can reach temperatures of 550°C in a fire, where it then can lose its load bearing capacity and collapse. Building regulations and legislation demand fire protection to upgrade the fire resistance of buildings. In addition to these tests, paints also come with fire retardant classifications of A through C. The system was originally developed by the National Fire Protection Administration for their “Line Safety Code”. When observing the rules of buildings, make sure to take into account the required retardant classification before purchasing your paint materials. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about fire resistant and fire retardant paints, recommend the best fire resistant paints, and help you understand fireproofing standards set forward by NFPA, ASTM, and UL. Fire Resistant vs. Fire Retardant Paints Heat resistant paints available at Rawlins Paints are designed to withstand high-temperatures of up to 750°C on commercial and industrial metal/metallic surfaces and structures – ranging from heat treatment applications, including incinerators and furnace chimneys, to pipework and vessels in chemical processing plants. For very demanding inland/offshore environments, VHT (very-high-temperature) paints and coatings are also required to deliver high-performance humidity resistance and anti-corrosive protection against liquids including water, oil and gasoline/petrol, as well as salt, gas, rust and chemical solvents.ATSM E-84/UL 723- usually just called the “E-84”, this is the most common fire standard. This test measures the flame spread along a sample to determine the predicted burning behaviors. When working on new projects or renovations, keep in mind that almost all facilities require an ASTM E-84 test. Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat is an oil based, decorative flame retardant paint used to decorate and complete Thermoguard fire protection upgrading systems including:

If you want to keep the beautiful, natural quality of your timber then fire retardant varnish could be your best bet. As this provides the same flame-protection standards as the fire proof timber paint, but retains a clear finish, existing varnishes, natural wood or wood stains will still show through. In fact, you won’t be able to tell that the varnish is fire resistant, so the focus can remain on the aesthetics of your surfaces. Intumescent Paint Colours For Steel However, these paints and coatings are typically not appropriate for critical infrastructure like steel. For most projects that involve structural steel or other critical infrastructure, you’ll need an ASTM E-119-certified fire resistant paint. It is good practice to key the surface while wet using waterproof abrasive paper or pads if the surface is new or you are applying a water-based finish on top of solvent-based or glossy paint, or on a very hard and impermeable surface. Intumescent paint is a newer method and works by growing and forming a barrier when exposed to extreme heat.

Rustins – for metal and wood, inside and out

Class 0: Class 0 requirements are for high risk areas such as corridors, staircases and escape routes. The requirements include those for class 1, but add an extra requirement known as the ‘Fire Propagation Index’ which measures how much the paint contributes to the fire. The coating must have a very low ability to catch fire and burn. In contrast, most fire retardant paints are not ASTM E-119 tested or compliant. They prevent flame spread and typically have an ASTM E-84 rating. If a building material catches fire, the fire retardant paint works to slow the rate that the flames spread. Fire retardant paint most commonly stops fire and flame spreading over a surface by releasing a gas when they get hot. They can be applied to walls, ceiling and floors, masonry, timber and plaster and, depending on the environment, must comply with certain standards. For example, if you are using fire retardant coatings for wood trim in a hotel, they would need to meet current legislation. If you need to protect a structurally critically component part of your building, you’ll need a fire resistant paint that’s ASTM E-119 compliant. That means getting a coating that’s designed to withstand a fire exposure for a specific amount of time. FlameOFF’s Fire Barrier Paint provides an eco-friendly fire resistant coating that’s 100% ASTM E-119 and E-84 compliant.
