Description

That’s the cinematic side sorted, but what about those keen to engage in some next-gen gaming? Well, there’s bad news on that front. With no HDMI 2.1 ports, the LG A1 does not support 4K at 120Hz or VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), so those looking to get the most out of their PS5 and/or Xbox Series X will want to look elsewhere (perhaps the LG C1 OLED or Samsung Q80A) for their gaming goodness. Add to the audio mix virtual 5.1 surround sound, AI algorithm up-mixing and Dolby Atmos surround sound support, and the A1 presents a surprisingly meaty, immersive audio experience for what is considered a budget OLED model. The biggest change this year is probably the introduction of Mini LED, an LCD TV technology also used by TCL. LG’s Mini LED screens aren’t replacing its OLED TVs, but it could give new life to the company’s LCD displays, which tend to feel a bit underwhelming next to their impressive OLED siblings. Add to that the inclusion of Dolby Vision IQ to enhance images further by intelligently adjusting picture settings based on both the HDR content it’s showing and the ambient light of your surroundings, plus HDR10 and HLG support to boot, and the picture performance ought to be worth every penny of the entry price.

With those four HDMI 2.1 ports providing all the ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and 4k 120Hz loveliness that a gamer could ask for, the GX is just as desirable as the CX for console-based entertainment. It’s ready and raring for the next-gen consoles to arrive.

LG Nano90 4K NanoCell (55, 65, 75, 86-inch): We’re no longer in Mini LED / QNED territory, with these 2021 iterations on last year’s NanoCell LCD TVs. The Nano90 is a 4K set featuring Nano Color, a 120Hz panel, It’s compatible with the Gallery Stand, too. So, what’s new with LG TVs in 2021? There's a lot to get excited about. 2021 sees LG introducing a new round of processors, as ever, with the a9 getting a Gen 4 AI iteration, as well as a step-down a7 Gen 3 model for the new A Series. (The A Series will cleave close to the B Series of previous years, for those wondering.) Bear in mind that brightness peaks at a low 178cd/m2 in Dark Room mode, though, so it really is best suited to more dimly lit rooms. If you want to leave all the lights on, you’ll need to swap to the Bright Room mode (which bumps brightness up to 222cd/m2) or increase the Peak Brightness setting to High. LG C1 4K OLED (48, 55, 65, 77, 83-inch): The successor to last year’s popular CX OLED is the C1, with a new 83-inch size, an a9 Gen 4 AI processor, and support for Dolby Vision / Atmos. You’ll get the most sizing options with the C Series, going as small as 48 inches and including a new 83-inch size. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for four months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. That’s something all the OLED TVs can do, so it’s nice to see it in the more affordable entry-level Nano Cell series. The only downside to this model is that it uses edge-lit LEDs instead of a full array panel which will definitely take a toll on contrast, but again, you get what you pay for. LG QNED95 8K TV (65, 75-inch): The QNED95 cleaves close to the QNED99, as a Mini LED 8K TV, but makes do with a 60Hz panel rather than 120Hz. It uses an 8K iteration of the a9 Gen 4 AI Processor too. HDR content tells a similar story. You’ll get eye-searing impact and brightness from the LG’s HDR Vivid mode but it isn’t strictly accurate – it’s just the brightest of the bunch. For out and out accuracy, you’ll want to opt for the Cinema preset for all HDR content. This lowers the peak brightness, though, so you may want to enable the Dynamic Tone Mapping option to get a bit more punch – or resort to the Vivid mode for the brightest rooms. We’ll even see support for Google Stadia and the Nvidia GeForce Now streaming services land in the second half of 2021, in a major boost to both platforms.

It has pretty much everything you’d expect from a top-flight TV in 2020. You get LG’s superb WebOS front end which supplies silky smooth access to all the major streaming services, including Netflix, Now TV, Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Rakuten, Youtube and more. There’s also support for hands-free voice control, and you can request Alexa or Google Assistant’s help, too, if that suits. Dolby Vision content gets a nice brightness boost from the Cinema Home preset, though, and this is brilliant for daytime HDR viewing – it uses Dolby Vision IQ to dynamically adjust the overall picture brightness to suit the lighting conditions.

More about this manual

It’s not a massive step up from the UN6900 but the UN7300 will add smart assistants (Google, Alexa and Siri through AirPlay 2) as well as Sports Alert through WebOS. Unfortunately there's no Dolby Vision support at this level and the panel runs at a native 60Hz. Both those specs change with the next step up, thankfully.

We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for two months in our Accelerated Longevity Test.
