Cleaning Kit Pouch– Find a clean, sealable plastic container or pouch to store all of the above gear. If you have it all rattling around in a draw, it’ll get dirty and dusty. Please keep it clean so it’s ready to clean your gear every time. Take a folded lens cleaning paper or lens tissue and apply 3-5 drops of the lens cleaner onto it. With the lens facing upright, hold it firmly with one hand. In 2018 a study was performed by Hochschule Furtwangen University in Germany to investigate the bacterial levels on spectacles and analyse the efficacy of four different cleaning methods to reduce microbial loads. The cleaning methods tested were moist alcohol and alcohol-free lens cleaning wipes, dry tissue, and dry microfabric cloth. Eyeglasses Cleaner– It’s readily available at the local optometrist and given out when you buy glasses or sunglasses.

The final step is to wipe the lens. This will clean it of any smears/smudges not removed by the blower and brush. Also, avoid cloth that has been dried with fabric softener, it can leave a film on your glasses and cause smudging. The best choice is to use a microfiber cloth, 100% cotton cloth, or an eyeglass cleaning cloth made specifically for that purpose. To be extra safe, only use rubbing alcohol with a high percentage of purity. The purer the alcohol, the less additive ingredients which can contaminate lenses. 95% purity is a good benchmark. Can you clean camera lenses with glasses cleaner? Zeiss Wipes are ideal and perfectly safe for cleaning camera lenses. These have been made specifically for cleaning camera products. Here is another recipe for a DIY eyeglass cleaner that uses vinegar as an anti-fog ingredient. Fill your spray bottle with one part vinegar, one part rubbing alcohol, and one part distilled water. Shake it up and start cleaning. Don’t Do This!Hold the blower a few centimetres away so that you don't hit the lens with it, and give it a good squeeze. The air should gush out nice and fast! Mobile phone screens attract dust quite easily, and this can make it difficult to see and work effectively. These items are also touched regularly, and it’s important to clean them on a regular basis to remove smudges and prevent the possible spread of germs. The easiest and safest way to clean your digital devices is with a wipe specially designed for screens. ZEISS Smartphone Wipes are specially designed and independently tested to provide safe and effective cleaning for your smartphone. Remember that not all lenses are weather-sealed, and as such, you should be very careful using liquids when cleaning the lens barrel. Buy a couple of microfiber cleaning cloths and have one at home and one in your camera bag at all times.

ZEISS AntiFOG spray and ZEISS AntiFog Cloth leaves behind a thin film (comparable with a temporary additional coating) on the lenses. This ensures that fine, condensed water droplets cannot adhere to the lens surface. Ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA): Chelating agent (reduces heavy metals) and not a true preservative Now that the lens is clean, it’s time for the final polish. Provided you have gone through steps 1 – 3 and cleaned your lens effectively, you can use a soft and fine-weave microfiber cloth to get a sparkling finish. All spectacles are contaminated with bacteria including potentially pathogenic ones and therefore should be considered as objects which could carry infection. 1

Multipurpose Solutions

Take the damp lens cleaning tissue in your other hand and gently wipe across the lens surface. Use a side to side motion rather than a spiralling motion if possible.

Coroi MC, Bungau S, Tit M. PRESERVATIVES FROM THE EYE DROPS AND THE OCULAR SURFACE. Rom J Ophthalmol. 2015;59(1):2-5. The basic LensPen design has been around for many years and now comes in various sizes to suit lenses from large DSLR optics down to tiny phone camera hardware. This NLP-1 variant is the original design, suitable for larger lenses. Its standout feature is its 12mm diameter tip. This has a slightly concave surface to follow the curvature of your lens’s front element, and is coated in carbon to enable it to remove grease and fingerprints without resorting to a liquid cleaner. How often you clean your lens depends on how often you use them. If you like to go out and shoot every weekend, then get in the habit of sprucing up your lenses every Friday night.

The carbon tip can be ‘recharged’ by rubbing it against the inside of its protective cover and should be good for around 500 cleans. The other end of the pen houses a retractable brush - useful for an initial sweep if your lens is particularly dusty. This one comes down to personal preference. You can use glasses lens cleaner for camera lenses… but the question is, do you really want to? With your other hand, hold your camera lens angled downwards. Any dislodged dirt and dust should fall down and away from the surface of the lens. Keeping a lens filter clean is no different to keeping the fixed front lens element clean. The benefit of applying one is that if you scratch or damage it beyond repair, you can throw it away, and your lens is still in pristine condition. To wipe a camera lens, you can use either a microfibre lens cloth or lens cleaning wipes. Both have pros and cons. By inspecting, you'll see whether they actually need cleaning before you dive in. Too much cleaning can damage lenses over the long run — so any cleanaholics read that again!
