He devotes a great deal of attention to the influence of organized crime and independent promotion but never bogs down the story with extraneous detail. Despite being published 20 years ago, this paperback edition of Dannen’s explosive music industry exposé is an enthralling read.

The narrative hook for that section is about the growth of, and subsequent occasional fumbling attempts to rein in, what was essentially Payola 2. An entertaining collection of anecdotes about an uproariously unsavory subculture of egomaniacs, sybarites, goniffs, and music lovers. This is a fantastic book if you really want to know the history of the senior executive machinations at CBS Records during the 70's and 80's or about the Network of indie promoters who controlled radio play during the same time. Less than a decade after this book was published the industry would reach both its apex and downfall, surprisingly within a short one or two year window). Combined with a rare inside look at how the corporate conglomerates dealt with goings on makes this an important book for true music nuts like myself. Mark Shaw is director of the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime and senior visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science’s International Drug Policy Project. Payola, in which cash (and drugs and women) payments were made to DJs and program directors, had been around for decades, but many had assumed that the big Federal crackdown in the early 1960s had killed it.Lots of pages on CBS and Walter Yetnikoff, his associates and rivals, with a touch of David Geffen, Irving Azoff and some Larry Tisch at the end. Written by an investigative journalist, this book looks at professional killers, the people who hire them, and those who die at their hands. Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page. Unsavory revealing of strongarm bullies controlling what got played on the radio (not inc college radio) through bribery paid to " promotion" men which explains why the same ten songs got played til they sounded like nauseating shit for a decade or two and thousands of great songs , which couldve been hits ,did not. Chronicling the evolution of America’s largest music labels from the Tin Pan Alley days to the present day, Fredric Dannen examines in depth the often venal, sometimes illegal dealings among the assorted hustlers and kingpins who rule over this multi-billion-dollar business. As author Mark Shaw reveals in this highly original and informative book, the ‘upper world’ sails perilously close to the underworld. Dry as it can be, but full of all kinds of interesting information and insight into a portion of organized crime's association with the music industry. It's competently but not amazingly well written and seems to suffer from a focus bias based on the author's sources. Unenjoyable though comprehensive ,repetetive /sic/ telling of faceless execs' egos back and forthing with their jobs. RL, reluctant and struggling readers into the high school years will find themes that resonate and provide good conversations or writing responses for class work.

Dannen reserves his sharpest barbs for ’80s CBS Records head Irving Azoff, who here seems like the ultimate gladhanding sleazebag. About the Author: Stephen Breen is currently crime editor of the Irish Sun and has made regular appearances on Irish TV to discuss crime issues. Publisher Sandycove yesterday said: “We’re delighted with the early success of The Hitmen and we’re sure it’s going to go on and be a massive seller for us. mixes the skills of an investigative journalist with the gifts of an expert storyteller in an expose that will intrigue and appall readers with its disclosures. The book examines a system in which contract killings have become the norm, looking at who arranges hits, where to find a hitman, and even what it is like to be a hitman – or woman.Record companies were a bit slow to pick up on the rock n roll era, with the big labels sticking mainly to middle-of-the-road, pop, classical artists. Overall a very good quality service from this seller and I would not hesitate to recommend this seller. Left winger Nolan Andrews thinks it's great that he can play hockey in Calgary, where his older brother, Nathan, is a star center for the Hitmen. Sure there were some losses like Jacko and Whitney Houston, but the inability to create many long lasting acts over the last 30 years is amazing. So then they hit on the Compact Disc technology, which really saved their bacon when it caught on because now they could charge four times as much for an album.
