Home > My thoughts: It is bright, bold, colorful--in terms of illustrations. The text is silly, exuberant, a bit over the top. Your little one may LOVE it--you may love it for that matter. Some of Lucy Cousins' books I just love. I do. But I didn't personally love, love, love this one. Moving from badgers to bears, Mostly Mary (Egmont) is a charming reissue of Gwynedd Rae’s Mary Plain stories, first published in 1930. Clara Vulliamy’s joyous fuzzy-furred pictures are a perfect match for these down-to-earth tales of a mischievous, haughty, trouble-prone bear cub, set in the bear pits in Berne. (Purists may note that references to corporal punishment have been tactfully edited out.) Bob blwyddyn, mae’r BookTrust yn trefnu Wythnos Genedlaethol Dechrau Da i ddathlu holl hwyl a budd rhannu straeon, llyfrau a rhigymau â’ch plantos bach o oedran mor ifanc â phosibl – dydy hi byth yn rhy gynnar i ddechrau! As well as acting out each scene, there is the chance to sit with your child and teach they about the different types of birds there are. From starlings to parrots, penguins to owls, this book is not only fun, but could be educational too.

Synopsis

HOORAY FOR BIRDS is a vibrantly colorful celebration of our feathered friends, which encourages kids to act like a range of birds both familiar and exotic. This would make a fun read-aloud! Sensory bins are great ways to spike a child’s curiosity and imagination. Additionally, it provides unlimited opportunities of texture play that is known to build nerve connections that trigger a child’s inclination and ability to pursue complex learning. Language development, motor skills, social skills, problem solving, all get honed with sensory play. This few steps may require some help from an adult – take the other ball and place the googly eyes to make a face. Released about two years ago, A Busy Day for Birds is among my favorite books by Lucy Cousins (The other one being “Hooray for Fish!”). This is a perfect read-aloud book, considering its large print, vibrant illustrations and rhyming text. There’s more maniacal energy – though a slight dearth of restraint – in the first children’s book from AL Kennedy. In Uncle Shawn and Bill and the Almost Entirely Unplanned Adventure (Walker), a young badger falls foul of two dastardly sisters, who plan to pit him against terrifying fight dogs. It’s perhaps a pity that the adult Uncle Shawn is drafted in to save the day, but there are several belly laughs along the way – especially courtesy of Gemma Correll’s wide-eyed illustrations. Author Luke Palmer introduces his new book, Play (Firefly Press) about four boys growing up together, the challenges, the friendships, and what hap... Definitely recommended for a fun, silly read with some pretty birds and hilarious noises to impress your children with.Ein llyfr arbennig iawn eleni oedd A Busy Day for Birds / Diwrnod Prysur yr Adar, sydd wedi’i ysgrifennu a’i ddarlunio gan Lucy Cousins, a’i addasu gan Aneirin Karadog.

Finally, DJ and presenter Gemma Cairney’s Open – A Toolkit for How Messed Up and Magic Life Can Be (Macmillan) is a chunky non-fiction splurge of glitter, anecdote and jubilation. With sections on mental health, sex, identity, family, politics and first love, it’s likely to appeal more to female readers at first glance (but would be invaluable for boys brave enough to sneak a peek). The intense, sometimes confessional tone, strongly personal throughout, may polarise readers, and some areas, such as the section on climate change, seem slightly perfunctory. Overall, however, it’s a valuable resource, full of reassurance for teenagers that they are not alone, whatever they feel. About Lucy Cousins

This book introduces young children to a number of different birds but they will need to rely on whoever is reading the book to them to supply the birds’ names as these are not included in the text. However, this is a very minor point and I can see this book becoming a firm favourite with children. It will also appeal to librarians and pre-school teachers who can encourage the children to copy the actions described.
