The Prophet’s mercy extended to the universe around him. He taught his companions to protect birds; he even consoled grieved animals; and showed endearing concern for the trees and plant life. The Prophet always took little from the earth and taught his followers to preserve water even if they were near a running river. He used to bind a stone around his waist out of hunger. He would eat what was brought, and would not refuse any permissible food. If there was dates without bread, he would eat, if there was roast meat, he would eat; if there was rough barley bread, he would eat it; if there was honey or something sweet, he would eat it; if there was only yogurt without even bread, he would be quite satisfied with that.

The ‘experience of God’ is among the most challenging phenomena to put into words, since God is so diverse in His manifestations in our lives and our experiences of God differ from person to person. Allah” is the Arabic word of God, and populations who have inherited the Arabic language or Arabic words call God, “Allah”. Even Jews and Christians in Arabic speaking countries refer to God as “Allah”. Is the God in Islam the same as the God in Judaism or Christianity? Early Meccan verses focus on the Oneness of God, patience as a response to hardship, the importance of doing good works, condemnation of evil practices, such as female infanticide, in society, and an emphasis on the afterlife as the eternal life with vivid descriptions of heaven and hell. Perhaps the most impactful way in which the Prophet Muhammad’s path ( sunnah) is known and preserved is through the lived example of pious – and sometimes even not so pious – Muslims. Scholars and sages are especially looked to as inheritors of the sunnah. But, following the sunnah is one of the foremost concerns of any believing Muslim. Monotheism and the belief in Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the last messenger of God is the central tenet of Islam around which everything else revolves, and reciting the Shahada (shahadah) in prayer each day serves to remind Muslims of this integral belief. It is a form of Islamic divorce which is instant in nature. It allows any Muslim man to legally divorce his wife by stating the word “ Talaaq ” three times in oral, written, or more recently, electronic form. This is prevalent among the Muslims in India, especially among the adherents Hanafi school of Islam. This is also known as “Triple Talaaq” and has been a subject to debate and controversy. In the study of world religions, you will usually find that Islam as we know it today to be listed as one of the newest religions and certainly the youngest of the so-called Abrahamic Faiths (after Judaism and Christianity). From a purely historical perspective, there is good reason for this. The Prophet Muhammad, who history sees as the founder of Islam, is a relatively more recent figure (d.632) which makes Islam, from this perspective, only 1,448 years old. From the perspective of sacred history, however, as Muslims would understand it from their reading of the Qur’anic worldview, Islam is the oldest religion even predating the creation of human beings. Muslims view Islam as the primordial religion of the universe. If this sounds too metaphysical, simply consider the meaning of Islam – willing surrender to and harmony with God’s Will, meaning divine teachings and preferences. The testimony serves as a formal entrance into the religion as it emphasizes the central message of Islam which is to worship and serve God alone following in the footsteps of Muhammad as the confirming, clarifying and culminating Messenger of God. The statement is also recited in the daily formal prayers ( salah) and invoked frequently as a spiritual invocation.

For Muslims, there is no evil that is left unaccounted for, and ultimately, God is the All-Merciful and Most Just. Experiencing God God reveals in the Qur’an at least ninety-nine names for Himself. The most frequent of these are “ar-rahman” (the merciful) and “ar-raheem” (the compassionate). All chapters except one in the Qur’an begin with the verse, “In the name of God, the most merciful, the most compassionate.” Both “ar-rahman” and “ar-raheem” stem from the root r-h-m, which approximates what we might refer to as “unconditional tender love and care.” God is completely unlike humankind, as “there is nothing like Him” (112:4). Thus, the grandeur of God can neither be contained within a bodily form (i.e. incarnation) nor does God possess flaws in perception or judgement like humans do. Is God male?

The practice of Temporary “Muta” marriage is widespread in the modern times and often arranged by Imams and other Islamic leaders in Europe, America (Shia parts of Dearborn, Michigan), and in the Middle east. It is commonly the destitute widows and orphaned girls that are within the clutches of temporary marriage who are often sold to old men. For the women, there is no desire or pleasure that drives them into such misery; it is the extreme means to pay the rent and feed themselves and their children. As a result, this arrangement has received widespread criticism by various countries as it impliedly encouraging legalization of prostitution. God has determined the result of everything in one’s life such as provisions, health, lifespan, and afterlife. God’s will cannot be altered by anyone or anything. God’s decree is that human beings be given free choice in certain matters and no choice in other matters. Free will is God’s Will - meaning no one can choose independently of God allowing them to. Human beings do possess the free will to choose how they act and live within the limits set by the divine decree, thus they are responsible for all their choices. Furthermore, the Qur’an proposes that believers should have an intimate relationship with the Prophet claiming that Muhammad is “closer to the believers than their own selves;” that the Prophet’s blessings are a source of great comfort for the believers; that God and the angels send peace and blessings upon the Prophet and so too should the Muslims; and that those who aspire to divine love must follow in the footsteps of the Prophet. Written Traditions… The sunnah is the normative and collective understanding of the Prophet’s Way. The sunnah is not determined by individual hadith (reports), but rather by the collective body of ahadith and then further interpretation and explanation of religious scholars who determine the sunnah from these reports. Muslims seek to follow the sunnah, not individual hadith on their own. What Makes a Hadith? The Qur’an speaks of a heavenly event in which God gathers all the souls that are to ever be brought into being and asks them a simple yet profound question, “Am I not your Lord?” The souls being in their pure and unveiled states gazing upon the essence of God, readily submit, “Yes! We bear witness!” This Muslims see as the primordial covenant that binds all living souls in submission to God.

Bumiller, Elisabeth. May You Be the Mother of a Hundred Sons: A Journey Among the Women of India. New Delhi: Penguin Books India, 1990. Carroll, Lucy. Certainly, this belief in Muhammad’s greatness is sourced in what Muslims take to be God’s Words in the Qur’an where the Prophet is described as a “role model,” possessing “sublime character,” being a “mercy to all the worlds,” a “guiding-light,” a “blessing,” a “warner,” and more. And who shuns the creed of Abraham, but a foolish soul? We chose him in the world and in the Hereafter he shall be among the righteous. And when his Lord said unto him, “Submit!” he said, ‘I submit to the Lord of the worlds.” And Abraham enjoined the same upon his children, as did Jacob, “O my children, God has chosen for you the religion, so die not except in submission.” Or were you witnesses when death came to Jacob, when he said to his children, “What will you worship after I am gone?” They said, “We shall worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac: one God, and unto Him we submit” (Qur’an 2:130—133). And, just a few verses later, the Prophet Muhammad and his followers are commanded to Say,

So, Islam then for the human beings is an invitation to join the rest of God’s created universe in harmony and submission. It is an invitation and not a subjugation because God has endowed the human beings with the special responsibility of free will. Human beings can choose harmony or disharmony. The choice does have earthly and afterlife consequences. Islam as a religion – meaning as an organized way of living life in accordance with divine will – is seen by Muslims to be the religion that was given to Adam and Eve, as the first of the human beings, when they entered the chaotic moral universe of earthly life after having only known heavenly bliss. Upon coming out of a state of blissful innocence, having been tempted by Satan to disobey God, Adam and Eve – in the Qur’anic narrative – turn earnestly to God in repentance, seeking guidance. In response, God promises that The biography of Muhammad is known as seerah. The earliest written seerah was penned 150 years after the passing of the Prophet – a heavy collection of all the oral traditions that existed about Muhammad from Muslim and non-Muslim sources. A shorter version of that initial biography was written some 50 years later. The seerah does not possess the same rigor as hadith when it comes to verifying the historical accuracy or authenticity of stories and traditions. As such, there are key details in the biography of the Prophet that are debated in terms of historical accuracy to this day. New books of seerah continue to be written every year that draw on past works, but also offer new lessons from the Prophetic life or revisions to historical accounts. The declaration of divorce must be preceded by attempts of reconciliation between husband and wife by 2 arbitrators. If the attempts fail, then only the divorce will come into effect. A husband is required to pronounce a formula of Talaaq three times, during three successive tuhrs. It is important that pronouncements are made when no intercourse takes place during any period of tuhr. The marriage is dissolved irrevocably, regardless to the period of iddat. Talaaq-i-Biddat
