Rumours that Red Bull Hardline will become a series have been roaming the internet corridors a while, so it's perhaps no surprise to have the official news: Hardline will have... Perhaps the main USP of the Burgtec Enduro MK3 is that it is available in a 42.5mm length. It may sound daft and all rather Princess-and-the-pea, but a couple of mm here and there with stems can certainly be felt by experienced riders. So if you’ve tried 40mm and 45mm stems and not quite gelled with them, here’s the (42.5mm length) stem for you!

I currently have a 60mm stem and quite fancy treating myself to a little bling in the flavor of a nice shiny CNC’d stem. We don’t ‘choose‘ stem length — we get whichever stem length puts us in the correct riding position. We don't 'choose' stem length - we get whichever stem length puts us in the correct riding position. Almost all mountain bike handlebars use either a 31.8mm or 35mm bar clamp. Ian Linton / Immediate MediaAt one end (nearest to the rider if sitting on the bike), the stem has a hole through it top to bottom, with pinch bolts to clamp it to your bike’s steerer tube. Here, the stem holds the steerer tube in place in the headset. Direct-mount stems are used for aggressive riding, such as downhill mountain bike racing. Alex Evans / Our Media Cutting straight to the chase, the pinstripe and crisp CNC vibe is either your thang or it isn’t. Truth be told, even if it is your thang, it may just simply not suit your bike. The swoopy, candy colour, gloss finish of certain carbon frames doesn’t lend itself to being paired with a chunk of lasered alloy. It’s expensive and needs careful setup but the Apex 35 is top-quality, will easily see years of service, and is a great stem for trail, enduro, and even XC use. Love the look of the Easton Haven stem, but only comes in 55mm or 70mm – would i notice much difference going up to the 70mm? Not really fancying going any shorter to 55mm…

Best mountain bike stems 2023 – the best stems to sharpen up

A word of caution: if you’re tinkering with any of the bolts of your stem, make sure they are only tightened to the manufacturer’s recommended torque setting. That’s usually 5Nm or 6Nm but should be printed on the stem, next to the steerer tube and/or faceplate bolts. The way I see it is I’m used to XC so a shorter stem will still give a trail feel even if it’s longer than what’s normal. Oh gotcha! Hmm, I don't think anyone but you (and maybe a trained bike fitter) could say what's "right" or "too long." Certainly nothing wrong with a 60-70mm stem if that's what feels good to your particular body on your particular bike. Plus, stems are cheap and easy to change so go nuts experimenting. When we talk about stem standards here, we’re primarily talking about compatibility with the streerer tube on your bike (measured in inches), but also the handlebar clamp (measured in millimetres). A stem with a rise can be useful if you want a higher bar height, but don’t want too many spacers under the stem or a higher-rise bar What is stem rise, and is it important? As you’d perhaps expect from a bike designed to straddle road and off-road, the stems found on gravel bikes normally sit somewhere between mountain bikes and road bikes in terms of length. The main standards you’ll find for bike stems are summarised below. As ever, more exist – and some bikes, such as the Canyon Aeroad CFR, use a proprietary system – but this captures the majority of common options on the market. 1 1/8in steerer, 31.8mm bar clamp

Stems Industry Nine - Stems

The Hixon, and the lighter, narrower bar Frazer XC combo, add an instantly futuristic look to your front end. They’re available to mimic fashionably short stem reaches and the latest versions extend span from 760 to 780mm. If the angle of sweep and rotation works for you the actual bar feel is really nicely balanced between accuracy and buzz damping control. This unique bar and stem combo uses an incredibly simple idea to create our favorite defibrillator for bikes with dead handling. Its been easy enough on the CX bike - 90 mm stem and a set of short reach compact bars has got me within millimetres of it. The Rose Pro SL routes the cables under the stem and into the headset top cap. Matthew Loveridge / Immediate MediaUltra short, ultra snappy bar and stem pairing that will liven up the handling of the dullest bikes. Syncros’s Hixon all-in-one carbon bar and stem looks amazing in a sci-fi way and feels great on the trail but bar fit and accessory mounting are very restrictive and conventional bar and stem combos are lighter and cheaper. The Paul Components Boxcar Stem (silver) is the perfect combination of stiffness, strength and reasonable weight and may be the coolest looking stem right now! The Focus Atlas is an example of a gravel bike with a relatively short stem. Felix Smith / Immediate Media
