Peter James is a British best selling writer of fictional crime novels. He has written 25 novels that have been translated into over 35 languages. His series featuring Detective Superintendent Roy Grace have sold over 14 million copies world wide. He has had six UK Sunday Times #1 books consecutively due to this series. Peter James was born on August 22, 1948 in Brighton, Sussex, England. His mother Cornelia James was the Queen’s Glovemaker.

His 1992 novel Prophecy was adapted into the first episode of the 1995 Chiller TV series. Since 2021, his Roy Grace series has been adapted into the ITV series Grace, starring John Simm.In 2005 The Merchant of Venice, directed by Michael Radford and for which James was executive producer, had a royal premiere in the presence of Prince Charles and received a BAFTA Award nomination. In 2006 the film also won the Silver Ribbon for Best Production Design ( Migliore Scenografia) from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists. In terms of my writing, I always joke I’m an overnight success that took 25 years! Because that is how long it took before I could start to live my childhood dream, to make a living out of writing novels. Readers and writers are always interested to learn about the journey. Has this series met your expectations? Or did you dream of even wilder success? Tell us about your writing aspirations before you made it big. Your villains are sometimes victims of childhood abuse. Tell us a bit about damaged souls. Do you sympathize with your villains? I’m not sure where to start. Peter James is a bit of a Legend in my eyes. He is one of those authors that everybody knows; the man is most certainly one of my favourites. The one small problem I have, and have continued to have with the last few books is the ongoing storyline involving his missing wife Sandy. Now for people wanting to start the series from the beginning and haven’t yet got around to it, please don’t carry on reading my review because it will no doubt contain spoilers (this also applies to people who haven’t read the latest book as things mentioned in my review refer to those events, and I HATE a spoiler. Brighton has its first serial killer in over eighty years.I think we are fascinated by how the most seemingly normal people often are the most monstrous criminals. You mention the UK’s worst ever serial killer, Dr. Harold Shipman, and he is a classic example, but there are many more. One aspect that particularly fascinates me is just how many of the worst violent criminals are, outwardly, such seemingly innocuous people. Shipman was a much loved family doctor, who just had a penchant for killing his patients, and murder up to 350 of them. Ted Bundy, one of the US’s worst criminals, raped, murdered, and butchered over 35 women, yet was witty, bright, charming, and had worked as a lawyer for the Republican party. Well, that was quite the ride; I'm exhausted. The Sandy-named elephant in the room has still to come to adequate conclusion, yet that aspect didn't hang like a pall over this book because the story was just so exciting. Far-fetched but very exciting. Something new though, there is definitely a cliff-hanger element to the end of the investigation so we all know there is to be at least one more book starring Grace. I have had a change of heart about Roy Grace, I now believe that the behaviour he exhibited was motivated by a desire to protect his wife, who was then in an emotionally fragile state. In his place, I am not sure I would have done anything different. I have upgraded my rating to 3 1/2 stars.

If anyone has not read these books, I suggest you start at the beginning. The characters have been built up right from the start and it would be beneficial for any reader. Saying this, it works as a stand-alone read. His father ran the business as well as an accountant. His sister Genevieve now runs the company along with her husband. He attended Charterhouse School and later attended Ravensbourne Film School. James spent a few years working in North America as a film producer and screenwriter. He got his start in 1970 on the Canadian children’s television show Polka Dot Door as an errand boy and later writer. He cofounded Movision Pictures in the nineties.
