Both Portra 400 and Fuji Superia are known for having fine grain, however, Portra 400 should have the finer grain of the two. Now, once again, I’ve only got on picture with someone in it and it’s not the best picture to show skin tones with.

Kodak Portra 400 is undeniably better but Fuji Superia is really good for what it is. What Are They Best For? Best-in-class underexposure latitude?no other colour film gives you so much latitude (-2 to +3 stops) so you can shoot with confidence even under challenging lighting conditions.

There’s not much to say about the image qualities Portra brings to your street photography that wasn’t covered in the last section. The cleanness, sharpness, contrast, and muted colours just work. Capture life’s vibrancy and passion with the classic film that inspired a whole crop of new portrait photographers. Kodak Portra 400 is one of the world’s most popular colour negative film and is perfect for both studio and location shoots. It is loved by experienced film shooters for its accurate skin tones, sharp focus, fine grain structure and superior flexibility in exposure. I think that generally, Portra is known for its muted, pastel colours (with perhaps a very slight yellow hue) and to be honest, Fuji Superia nearly replicates that with perhaps a little bit more saturation. Portra 400 appears to have a somewhat finer grain than Kodak Gold 200 . Although, it’s still chunkier than Portra 160 and Ektar. With most people still processing their work in a darkroom, the inherent differences in colour and contrast in these films were a big help.

Superb colour in mixed light?no matter the lighting conditions, even under fluorescent, you can expect beautiful, natural colour. The modern iteration of the Kodak Portra film was heavily designed for scanning. So it will translate into digital very well. Kodak Portra 800 wasn’t designed for scanning: it’s got a more classic look to it.Superior Sharp Focus – Capture high image resolution & depth of field even in dim lighting, with the film giving great results even when pushed The same streamlining happened with the ISO 160 Portra a year later, while the ISO 800 Portra was only ever available in a single version anyway. Portra 400 on the other hand, is there for when you need to take really good, high quality pictures. It’s ideal for portrait, editorial work, landscape and a lot of things in between. Are They Worth It?

Colours. All Portra films reproduce colours in medium-low contrast relatively accurately. These films have some trouble with keeping greys neutral in the shadows — as is the case with most colour negatives — but can deliver remarkable results in most well-lit scenes. For greater colour accuracy, consider Kodak Ektachrome E100 . Portra films deal exceptionally well with well-lit skin tones. With a fine grain structure and excellent sharpness, this film is a favourite among professional and amateur photographers alike. Shop with us to get your hands on a roll of Kodak Portra 400 film in medium format and see for yourself the exceptional quality it has to offer. You might think a film designed for shooting portraits and weddings and the like would be a bit sterile for street photography. In my opinion, that would be a wrong assumption. Even if you have to make adjustments to counter colour shifts, Portra 400 lets you do that without much loss to the image. I had no issues shooting it in all kinds of conditions, including nighttime, and getting the desired results after just a few minutes with Photoshop . How much does Kodak Portra 400 cost, and where to buy it. As per usual, Portra 400 is probably better in this department because of its dynamic range and finer grain, it’s tones are probably a bit better. Dynamic RangeI know what you’re thinking, it’s that meme from the office where she’s like “They’re the same picture” and honestly, there’s very little difference at all. The only thing that I think I can glean from these pictures is that the Superia may have a little more saturation in the magentas (the pink flowers) and possibly a little more green. Ultimately this is a premium film with very powerful chemistry, and the photos it will produce for you are going to be beautiful Pro Tip: the latest emulsions of Kodak Portra were designed to be scanned. We recommend Portra 400 more than almost anything else out there.
