With newborns, especially premature babies, the teat flow rate can actually be faster than your infant can tolerate. If your baby is exhibiting any of these signs while eating, you may want to try a slower flow (lower level) teat: While most bottles offer various teat levels that are tied to an age range (for example, 3 months+), every infant has their own feeding style, which is not necessarily a reflection of their age or size. There is no “right” time to change your baby’s teat level. Some babies are content using Level 1 throughout their feeding days, while more aggressive eaters may advance sooner than expected. Your baby will offer signs if the flow is not fast enough and it’s time to move up a level. Typical signs include baby: As a baby’s feeding develops and they are taking a longer time feeding from a Level 1 teat, many parents choose to move up to a Level 2 teat.

The MAM Baby range features four different flow sizes for teats. Confusingly their final size is called Size x, not size 4, and is an extra fast flow according to the manufacturer. You can see rough similarities in the banding between them – but remember that one brand’s slow flow rate won’t necessarily be identical to another’s. If you’re considering changing the flow of teats before your baby shows signs of being ready, there’s no harm in giving it a go. The Philips Avent teats come in six different sizes. The smallest of which is ideal for preemie babies, and the range goes up to a fast flow. Whether you're looking for an anti-colic baby bottle, a self-sterilising baby bottle, or an environmentally-friendly glass bottle for bottle feeding - the range comes in sizes from 130ml (4.5fl/oz) right up to 330ml (11/fl/oz) with suitable slow to fast flow teats and accessories are available.

Can I buy bottles with faster flowing teats?

He started waking in the night. The poor kid was probably starving. I was trying to hold off on giving him the sixth bottle if I could help it so he started waking at 3am for the food he needed. I thought he was teething! Making lots of noise during feeds After this experience, I decided after reading online that many babies don’t need to increase the teat size that he must be ones of those babies, but then, not long later, Dexter started displaying a few key signs that he was indeed ready to move up to a faster flowing teat. NUK is a little different from some other manufacturers. It features two different teat sizes and each size comes with S, M and L hole sizes for you to choose from. Just to showcase how much flow rate varies by manufacturer, here is a guide to some of the bigger brands teat flows. Perfect for travelling babies and parents, the MAM Self-Sterilising baby bottles can be sterilised in just three minutes using a microwave. Pour 20ml water in the base of the container, arrange the components on the top (don't screw!) and in minutes your baby's bottles are safe to use.

As a baby’s feeding develops and they are taking a longer time feeding from a Level 2 teat, many parents choose to move up to a Level 3 teat.

If your baby is not doing well on a particular flow rate, and you’ve tried changing it, it may be time to switch to another brand. Dr Brown’s Made for Mums judge, Melanie said "Self-sterilisation is a good feature, and it's worth the money. Best-looking bottle on the market and great for sterilising on the go." As a baby’s feeding develops and they are taking a longer time feeding from a Level 3 teat, many parents choose to move up to a Level 4 teat. Wondering when to change teat size? Not sure if your baby is ready? There are a few key signs baby needs a faster flow teat. Find out more about our experience in changing Dexter’s teat size and the signs that showed us he was ready. When should you change the teat size?

Teats take quite a lot of hammering from little gums and teeth, so they need to be changed regularly. We recommend replacing teats every 2 months or at the first sign of any damage or weakness. Can I buy bottles with faster flowing teats? You are likely to change your baby’s teat size every two to three months. But that’s just a rough guide, and some babies may want a faster flow earlier than others.

So if you’re noticing a sudden change in your baby’s behaviour then you should cycle through the usual possibilities – growth spurt, developmental leap, sleep regression, teething– and add bottle flow rate to the list! It’s best to replace teats at regular intervals – at least every two to three months – as washing and sterilising will wear on the material. Comfort for your baby is vital, and our baby feeding bottles feature the MAM SkinSoft teat, which has a 94% acceptance rate*. If you think your baby is ready for the next sized teat there’s no harm in trying it. Below I have listed some of the things to look out for: What are the signs you have the right sized teat?

Dexter was around six months old when I changed the teats in his bottle from size 2 to size 3. I had previously attempted to change him to the bigger teats around a month before, but had failed spectacularly. Milk had spilled everywhere, he had choked, gagged, spat out the milk and finally started clamping his mouth shut. Dexter started going less time between feeds.Again, all fits in the above. He went from having a bottle four hourly to wanting it three hourly. Waking in the night When it comes to deciding on changing baby’s teat you can assess both the signs they’re ready as well as their age before taking the leap. Our self-sterilising anti-colic baby feeding bottles are multi-award winning, including the Loved By Parents (LPB) Platinum Award 2020, Mother & Baby Awards 2020 and Made for Mums Silver Award in 2019.
