The juxtaposition of boxing and fighting with drawing is a great literary device, and the theme of "promise" is one I would like to see in more books. Even though it has some heavy topics, this is a positive book with a character who is trying to do the right thing, and is seeking support from his community. Torrey Maldonado's HANDS would start my reading year with what I call a guaranteed read- appealing to many, with a fast-paced plot and the main character Trev connecting with readers. I love this book, and in my opinion, is Mr. Maldonado's best book! Deindustrialisation is a big part of the story. In 2017, 20 years after Tony Blair made a mantra of “education, education, education”, there were 5,000 steelworkers and 60,000 students. In his latest book, Head, Hand , Heart: The Struggle for Dignity and Status in the 21st Century, David Goodhart explores what he argues is the dark underside to this sociological revolution, via interviews, anecdotes and an impressive depth of research. Britain and America in particular, he suggests, suffer from a societal condition he describes as “Peak Head”, where cognitive achievement acts as a sorting mechanism in a supposed meritocracy. Along the way, we have devalued both technical, practical abilities (hand), and social and empathetic skills (heart), while alienating and demoralising the people who do the jobs that require them. In the final section of the book, Goodhart holds out hope that in richer countries “the ageing of society and the rising visibility of care functions,” as well as “greater concern for place, ecology and belonging”, may herald a new age in which “hand” and “heart” activities are again accorded the status they deserve, while robots become the new “knowledge workers”. That would be a state of affairs to confound Frank Brewin.Jess shares why the big fight started. ‘They were arguing about you, Trev. Dad told Ma, “You raising him soft.” I know because I’d eavesdrop at their bedroom door when they argued. Dad barked, “I tried teaching him to box and he was all whiny. No. I don’t want to throw a punch. I don’t want to hurt anybody.”’ Jess eyes me now. ‘Did that really happen?’ Trev would do anything to protect his mother and sisters, especially after his stepdad is sent to prison for hitting his mom. Suddenly Trev is taller and he used his height to his advantage, learning to box so he can stand up for his family when the time comes. The stress of his worrying, though, starts to get to him and when he ends up punching through a window to protect his sister, he realizes that maybe using his hands for anger and violence isn’t the way. Perhaps using them for his artwork is a better decision. Sometimes people ask me what books are still missing from the marketplace when it comes to kids. Where are the gaps? What aren’t we seeing? Honestly, I feel like sometimes you don’t know a gap’s even been there until it’s filled. Torrey Maldonado, now HE knows how to fill those kinds of gaps. I guess I sort of knew that short fiction for older kids had become increasingly hard to find, but it wasn’t really until I started reading his books that this was drilled home. Hands is going to find its audience and it’s going to resonate soundly with them. Homey and touching, complicated and unafraid to deal with paradoxes, I may not agree with all the decisions in the book but the final product is ultimately a strong piece I’d hand to any kid willingly. Especially the kids that don’t even know it’s what they need. Goodhart’s presentation of working-class values, in his last book and in this one, is too prone to emphasise a rather reactionary form of “small-C” conservatism, when the reality is surely less straightforward. Attachment to family and place and continuity – key “somewhere” values – does not inevitably go along with a suspicion of diversity and an aversion to change (although in certain political conjunctures, it might). And, at times, the author seems a little too keen to gratuitously bait liberal readers. At one point, discussing family values, he even takes a sideswipe at the sexual mores of the Bloomsbury set. But by highlighting dimensions of life and work that have been stripped of prestige in an age of individualism, he performs a valuable service. Many European societies, he observes, have managed to retain respect for “practical vocational intelligence” and people doing “basic jobs”. Given the coming age of automation, Britain urgently needs to start to do the same. As new technology eliminates many white-collar occupations, the age of the cognitive worker may be coming to an end, and with it “the golden age of mass higher education”. Short answer: Absolutely loved this book! 10 outta 10, would definitely recommend and definitely will.
