Shortlisted for the BPS Book Award 2014 in the Textbook Category* *Winner of the 2014 Distinguished Publication Award (DPA) from the Association for Women in Psychology (AWP)* Uniquely, the authors provide a 'patterns framework' to qualitative data analysis in this book, also known as 'thematic analysis'. The authors walk you through a basic thematic approach, and compare and contrast this with other approaches. This discussion of commonalities, explaining why and when each method should be used, and in the context of looking at patterns, will provide you with complete confidence for your qualitative research journey. For one, I felt the wording was often contrived and hard to follow, and that wasn't because of the materials complexity. Sometimes, I had to revisit sentences several times just to get rewrite the most bland sentence in my notebook - thus is the life of an academic I guess. Skills-based, utilising a range of pedagogical features to encourage you to apply particular techniques and learn from your experience. Uniquely, the authors provide a "patterns framework" to qualitative data analysis in this book, also known as "thematic analysis." This discussion of commonalities, explaining why and when each method should be used, and in the context of looking at patterns, will provide you with complete confidence for your qualitative research journey. In case you couldn't tell, I turned to qualitative research out of spite for quantitative research which, at the time, I felt had become increasingly reductionist and generalizable to a fault. At the time, my research topics tended to reside in intersections between Anxiety, Autism, and Religion. This meant that numbers were rarely capable of illustrating any phenomenon I was interested in. This was becoming so frustrating that I had to seek help from universities across the pond - which led to the summer research opportunity I mentioned earlier. My hope at that point was that Qualitative research could investigate the complexities of humanity with a little more nuance than statistical probabilities.

Like water wings for the qualitative research beginner, Successful Qualitative Research: A Practical Guide for Beginners gracefully supports methodological novices until they learn to swim elegantly, on their own, in qualitative waters… As a teacher, researcher or a student, you will want to thank the gifted methodologists Braun and Clarke for making it all seem so easy' Uniquely, the authors provide a patterns framework to qualitative data analysis in this book, also known as thematic analysis. The authors walk students through a basic thematic approach, and compare and contrast this with other approaches. This discussion of commonalities, explaining why and when each method should be used, and in the context of looking at patterns, will provide students with complete confidence for their qualitative research journey. The best part about all of this is that Dr. Braun and Clarke made me not hate quantitative research! They highlighted its uses and its pitfalls honestly and intelligently which made it much easier to return to my home university and struggle through (yet another) stats course!

Qualitative methods can be used as a precursor for quantitative research. For example, in a study of the effects of the experiences of depression, US professors of psychiatry and nursing James Coyne and Margaret Calarco (1995) conducted two focus groups and thematically organised participants’ statements into eight categories, drawing on these to develop a survey, which they used to generate the data they analysed. A clear, engaging and intelligent qualitative research guide which will greatly appeal to students new to this area. The authors should be commended for their lively style and attention to often hidden processes and practices involved in successful qualitative research' A qualitative research project may be conducted in a realist, positivist way, where the values and assumptions of Big Q qualitative research are rejected.Seeks to identify relationships between variables, to explain or predict – with the aim of generalising the findings to a wider population
