Teens and pre-teens are one of the most sought-after spending crowds, with retailers looking for ways to win their business. From the moment photographer Charlotte Hadden started her project Between, in which she photographs transgender children in the UK, she knew exactly how she wanted to approach the subject: on the children's own terms.

my parents never used to let me out in clothes like that but as soon as i was round the corner the skirt got rolled up to just covering the bum, shirt unbuttoned and full make up applied in a car mirror, and to think now id rather live in a thick baggy jumper lol. Parents play a major role in bringing up children, I myself am sometimes very surprised when I see young girl dressed up inappropriately. Instead, it highlights the regular, everyday lives of its subjects, from how they talk about their gender identity to how they spend time at home. With all the misunderstanding surrounding young gender-questioning and trans people, I wanted to give them an opportunity to share their stories," Hadden tells Refinery29. If at so young age the girls start dressing up like this, their innocence is totally lost and rather than enjoying their childhood they indulge in other activities.
