Harvest 2022 progressed well and finished earlier than the previous 5 years. For most of England and Wales harvest was completed by the end of August and for Scotland and areas of North-East England by mid- September. Harvest was completed before heavy rains arrived later on in September. With the exceptionally hot weather grain required little additional drying this year. The established property of their cholesterol-lowering effects [1] has led to acceptance of oats as a health food. [18] With husk Soluble fiber [ edit ] Valido E, Stoyanov J, Bertolo A, et al. The composition of straws depends on the species and, like other crop residues, on the proportions of stems, leaves and other material such as soil. Cereal and grass straw contains about 4% DM protein vs.about 10% for legume straws. The crude fibre and ADF levels are roughly similar (35-40% DM) but cereal straws tend do be much richer in NDF (about 74% DM) than legume straws (about 54% DM). The latter, however, are more lignified (10% lignin vs. 6.5% DM for cereal straw). Straws are poor in sugars and starch (less than 2% for wheat straw). Temperate cereal straws (wheat, barley, oats) tend to have relatively low levels of mineral matter (5-7% DM) but other cereal species, like rice, are rich in minerals (18% DM). a b c "Title 21--Chapter 1, Subchapter B, Part 101 - Food labeling - Specific Requirements for Health Claims, Section 101.81: Health claims: Soluble fiber from certain foods and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) (revision 2015)". It is incredibly beneficial to the nervous system and can help with sleep, stress reduction, and anxiety reduction. It is believed to accomplish this by bolstering the endocrine system and regulating the hormones associated with a healthy sexual drive. There are no known drug or nutrient interaction associated with the use of oat straw but for those that are allergic to oat flour, it could be a good idea to stay clear of any products containing oat straw. Oats, oatstraw, and milky oats are all extremely safe to consume during pregnancy and nursing. However, they are gentle enough to use on infants and small children. In fattening lambs, straws can result in a performance similar to that obtained with hay. Ewes have a limited intake capacity and at least 500 g/d of good quality hay must be given with the straw (1-1.5 kg/d) from late pregnancy to early lactation ( Devun et al., 2011). The area of field beans was 13% higher than last year at 212 thousand hectares. Despite the increased area, lower average yields meant production decreased by 8.5% to an estimated 635 thousand tonnes. Average yields decreased to 3.0t/ha from 3.7t/ha in 2021. The highest yields were seen in the North-East and West-Midlands. Winter beans fared much better than spring beans, aided by good planting conditions throughout autumn 2021 which led to good crop establishment. Whilst the dry spring did adversely affect winter beans grown on lighter soils those on moisture retentive heavier soils performed well. Spring beans planted during cool dry conditions suffered from moisture deficit and lower yields. Bruchid beetle activity was reduced this year across most areas particularly in northern areas with the notable exception of the South-West where activity increased. The quality of field beans was variable, with winter beans tending to have achieved good quality, whilst spring beans tended to be of poor quality.

There is a reason oats are so common in breakfast cereals, the most important meal of the day would be incomplete without one of the greatest herbal supplements.

One of the oldest and most traditional uses of oatstraw is as a nutritive tonic to restore the body and nervous system recover from prolonged stress, exhaustion, burnout, or illness. Oats are sown in the spring or early summer in colder areas, as soon as the soil can be worked. An early start is crucial to good fields, as oats go dormant in summer heat. In warmer areas, oats are sown in late summer or early fall. Oats are cold-tolerant and are unaffected by late frosts or snow. Oats are the only cereal containing a globulin or legume-like protein, avenalin, as the major (80%) storage protein. [21] Globulins are characterised by solubility in dilute saline as opposed to the more typical cereal proteins, such as gluten and zein, the prolamines (prolamins). Groats are sized again and separated by length and width using shaker screens and indent cylinders until uniform product streams are generated. Modern oat milling technologies also sort impurities by colour with colour sorting machines or more traditionally, on specific gravity with paddy tables or gravity table separators. A final grade of whole oat groats should have minimal oat hulls, other seeds or broken groats. Now that you’re aware of the benefits of the complete oat plant, it’s time to put them to the test!
