Murray, together with Stephen Fry, supported Paul Chambers's High Court appeals after Chambers had been arrested for contravening the Communications Act 2003 when a joke tweet was regarded by police as "menacing" and a terrorist threat. An appeal against Chambers's conviction was successful. [53]

Al Murray’s passion for military history and the Second World War in particular has always run parallel with his comedy and was brought to the fore with several acclaimed and award-winning television shows and the recent huge success of his podcast We Have Ways of Making You Talk which he hosts with fellow bestselling military author James Holland. In his first serious narrative book, Command showcases Al Murray’s passion for this pivotal period in the twentieth century, as he writes an engaging, entertaining and sharp analysis of the key allied military leaders in the conflict. In 2023, Murray co-wrote with Matt Forde and Sean Foley and is a voiceover artist Idiots Assemble: Spitting Image The Musical based on the TV series Spitting Image, which premiered at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in February, before transferring to London's West End at the Phoenix Theatre in May for 13 weeks. Al Murray: Command | The Spectator

I agree with the comment about the “Pub Landlord” persona sneaking into the writing in places but this has been done very sparingly and, I feel, very deliberately either to add emphasis to points which Murry highlights along the way or to add a small splash of colour to the narrative. Al Murray is one of the most successful comics in the UK with his alter-ego, The Pub Landlord. He has had four previous bestselling books, 'The Pub Landlord’s Book of British Common Sense', 'The Pub Landlord Says Think Yourself British', 'Great British Pub Quiz Book' and 'Watching War Films with My Dad'. However, he can’t help it and some Pub Landlord idioms find their way in to the text, yet are not out of place! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it did not dribble down to the nitty gritty of how someone actually gets another man or body of men to go to war. Giving the environment of the decision maker shows how they themselves were fashioned by events. Al Murray's new book proves, if anyone still feels the need to question it, that he is a major historian in his own right. Command is everything popular history should be: authoritative, full of deep wisdom and knowledge, genuinely fresh and original in approach and content, and both compelling and entertainingly written. Skilfully blending the famous names with those lesser known, he examines each in a completely fresh light, focussing on differing aspects that collectively offer a satisfyingly comprehensive whole that takes the reader on a journey across a wide range of landscapes, theatres and battles. It is an utter joy to read from start to finish. * James Holland *

In October 2021, Murray presented the Sky History programme Why Do the Brits Win Every War? [38] In each episode, Murray was joined by a different guest in examining conflicts against the Romans, Vikings, Scottish, French, Americans, and Germans. The programme features Bruno Tonioli, John Thomson, Sanjeev Kohli, Reginald D. Hunter, and Henning Wehn. I loved the whole atmosphere of the Oxford Literary Festival. From breakfast, alongside some of the attendees, who were talking books with each other a mile a minute, to the public event at The Sheldonian where everyone was lively and engaged – I felt I had arrived in a kind of literary heaven. He's a padbrat with his history degree being from Oxford. Did a static jump for the Market Garden commemoration too. The DUKE armies didn't start the war well. With Dunkirk now mythologised Murray does a great job of pointing out what a catastrophe it actually was. The early parts of the war are filled with DUKE armies evacuating - Norway, France, Greece, Crete etc. But equally he's good at popping the myth that all the DUKE and US armies had was technology and equipment whilst the German's had all the talent from Generals down. There is tendency among some military historians to fetishise the German army and this book is a good cure for that. Theatre tours have included ...And a Glass of White Wine for the Lady (another catchphrase) and Giving it Both Barrels.Murray invented his own potato crisps – branded "Steak and Al Pie" – as entered in a "crisp competition" hosted by Gary Lineker, used to raise money for Comic Relief. The other flavours were "Jimmy Con Carne" ( Jimmy Carr), "Stephen Fry-Up" ( Stephen Fry) and "Frank Roast Dinner" ( Frank Skinner). The winner was Stephen Fry-up at 27%, with Al's in 2nd with 25%. The other two got 24% each. [31] Command is an excellent modern history book of some substance which is well written and certainly engaging. The Christian O'Connell Show Sunday Night Show The Geoff Show Geoff Lloyd with Annabel Port Pete and Geoff In August 2014, Murray was one of 200 public figures who were signatories to a letter to The Guardian expressing their hope that Scotland would vote to remain part of the United Kingdom in September's referendum on that issue.
