Guillermo del Toro initially envisioned the idea of Trollhunters as a live-action television series. However, this was deemed impractical due to budgetary concerns of using computer generated monsters as main cast members in a live-action production, and as a result he instead turned the idea into a book he co-wrote alongside Daniel Kraus and published by Disney-Hyperion. [14] DreamWorks Animation then optioned the book to develop as an animated feature film set to be directed by Pixar veteran Rodrigo Blaas, who stayed on as executive producer when Netflix greenlit the project as a CGI-animated television series. [15] Marc Guggenheim was hired to pen the original screenplay for the film version, and went on to write pilot for Trollhunters. Dan and Kevin Hageman were brought on as co-executive producers for the series, with Aaron Waltke, AC Bradley, and Chad Quandt joining the writers' room. [16] As it's getting dark, Jim and Tub take a shortcut home through the local museum. Carol, the cashier, lets them through but Professor Lempke yells at them. Del Toro modeled the show's sensibilities after shows he grew up with such as Jonny Quest, identifying them as "really earnest and emotionally beautiful". [19] To this end, he sought to make the main character of Jim "in that '70s mold," and "really a very good boy" with del Toro noting that this was a constant struggle for him to express. [20] Eventually he came across Anton Yelchin, who embodied those qualities although by del Toro's estimate it still took him a few sessions to fully understand the character. [20] Writing [ edit ] Jim is given a brief lesson on troll history and his family’s connection to it, as well as the looming danger that is fast approaching.

Claire and some drama girls invite Jim and Tub to tryouts for Romeo and Juliet. Steve approaches and Jim and Tub attempt to evade him, eventually rolling under cars. A massive troll paw scares Jim, but Tub didn't see it.

Forty years ago, the town of San Bernardino suffered a wave of mysterious disappearances, which turned Jim's father into a terrified and obsessive being. Today, for the first time, Jim will have to take his father's paranoia very seriously. Because monsters sharpen teeth and claws in dark corners and lonely hallways. And Jim is about to meet them face to face. Life in high school is always complicated. But when the creatures of the dark begin to lurk through the corridors looking for human flesh... then it becomes terrifying.

I’m a huge fan of del Toro, so this became an immediate addition to my TBR, but what most intrigued me about this one is the difference in the fantasy focus: trolls. I’ve read plenty of vampire, werewolf, and faerie stories but a troll story? Can’t recall a single one. But these aren’t the trolls of my generation either. In 2018, Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt returned as co-executive producers and co-showrunners with Marc Guggenheim for Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, before departing to write and produce the forthcoming television series, Star Trek: Prodigy. [23] Fred Tatasciore as Aarghaumont "AAARRRGGHH!!!", [17] a burly troll and close companion of Blinky, who forms a deep bond with Toby. He was kidnapped by the Gumm-Gumms as a child from the Krubera (a race of troll that lives deep in the earth) which stunted his vocabulary. Tormented by the atrocities he committed, he deserted Gunmar to live a life of peace (as shown in Wizards). However, he will still fight to protect those he cares about. The writing team remained small and consistent throughout its entire fifty-two episode run, allowing Marc Guggenheim, The Hageman Brothers, Aaron Waltke, Chad Quandt, and A.C. Bradley to build out all three seasons in advance of the show's premiere without interruption. This provided the writers a rare opportunity for an unusual amount of intricate planning and plot serialization to be woven throughout the series, including details planted for secrets that wouldn't be revealed until seasons later, sometimes even hinting at storylines for future installments of Tales of Arcadia that wouldn't be announced until years afterward. [29] Accolades [ edit ] Year Trollhunters provides a good example of the classic story structure " The Hero's Journey", established by Joseph Campbell. It refers to a wide-ranging category of tales in which a character ventures out to get what they need, faces conflict, and ultimately triumphs over adversity. The following steps correspond to the following moments in the series (as there are various depictions of the Hero's Journey). The following uses the 12-step example: a b Trumbore, Dave (May 14, 2018). "New 'Trollhunters' Trailer Teases the Beginning of the End for the Title Team". Collider . Retrieved May 26, 2018.

My singular complaint, is that this novel does read like it was meant to be an ornamented movie script. Scenes that could be more powerful in fewer words are dragged out longer than they need to be, especially action scenes; I felt that the strength of the fight scenes floundered under their own verbosity. Also, some of the smaller scenes added in near the end felt as if pulled straight from film. I've had these same feelings before while reading works from other directors, and while I enjoyed those books as well, it seems to be a common thought that nags at me. McNary, Dave (August 7, 2020). The show serves as one of Yelchin's final projects as he died shortly after recording most of his character's dialogue. Producer del Toro refused to replace his recordings, [22] which del Toro noted was a challenge for the show's recording engineers. [20] Of his decision, del Toro stated that the actor "was proud of what he did, and we were so proud of how he did it." Del Toro added that his experience as a father and Yelchin's young age were also factors that led to the decision. [18] Some roles were written specifically for the actors who eventually portrayed them. In the earliest sketch for the series in one of del Toro's notebooks, the character of Blinky was drawn with Kelsey Grammer's name next to it, who accepted the role when the series was eventually greenlit. He also decided to release his notes and artistic personalizations over his years in cinema with a book called The Guillermo del Toro Cabinet of Curiosities: My Notebooks, Collections, and Other Curious Obsessions. It is not a work of fiction so much as an annotated compendium of his journals, sketches, and notes on his movies as he made them. Since its release, the franchise has been widely praised as an ambitious and boundary-pushing animated series, with Filmink's Travis Johnson calling it "the best children's animation to come along since Avatar: The Last Airbender." [7] Trollhunters was nominated for nine Daytime Emmy Awards in 2017, winning more than any other animated or live-action television program that year, [8] and the trilogy has been twice nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Children's Animated Series. It has also received or been nominated for a BAFTA Award, several Annie Awards, Golden Reel Awards, a Saturn Award, and twice won the Kidscreen Award of "Best New Series" for the first and final chapters, Trollhunters and Wizards. The franchise has been critically acclaimed for its high-quality CGI animation, its dark emotional and mature tone and complex writing, voice acting, representation of Latin Americans and immigrants, themes of prejudice, music, humor, and characters.
