Description

Dehumidifiers are often placed in living areas and may well run for long periods, including overnight. In these cases, a noisy machine can be an irritation and disturb your sleep, so your choice of dehumidifier may be influenced by the noise it makes. The tank capacity dictates how much water the water tank of the dehumidifier can hold before it needs emptying. A larger tank capacity – such as the MeacoDry Arete One Dehumidifier's generous 2.5L or 4.8Ltanks – means you won't be emptying it as frequently. Compressor dehumidifiers tend to be the most common design available in the UK. They work by drawing air into the dehumidifier via a fan, and then running the air over over cold coils to condense the moisture from it, whereby the condensed water is collected in a water tank. The coils are kept cool by refrigerant which means the unit also needs a compressor built in. The only downside of compressor dehumidifiers is that they need the air to be warm for this process to work. Most will work above 5°C, but they're most efficient at an ambient temperature of around 20°C (depending on the individual model). The quietest models produce slightly less than 30 decibels of noise, which is equivalent to the volume of a whisper. What is great about this dehumidifier, though, is the fact that the modes are so easy to choose. There is a dial on top to adjust the power and a switch to go from eco-mode to power mode.

It’s generally not recommended to dry laundry in rooms with a lot of soft furnishings (such as bedrooms) if at all possible. These models certainly have their uses, as they are generally reliable and easy to use. They are also lightweight and use minimal energy. Clearly, setting a lower fan speed will reduce the noise level but that also limits what the dehumidifier can do. When manufacturers quote a noise level this refers to the noise level at the lowest speed setting, so in practice the dehumidifier will often be louder. It's also important not to confuse the extraction rate with a dehumidifiers water tank capacity. As both are generally measured in litres or millilitres this can sometimes cause confusion. The Pro Breeze is great if you’ve got a smaller space and you want something that doesn’t cost a lot to run,” says Kandola. “It’s probably about a penny an hour.” What also makes this small dehumidifier differ from its counterparts is that it is very easy to use and maintain. The model features only one control button, plus the reservoir is easy to remove and to empty. On average, it is much cheaper to dry clothing with a dehumidifier than it is with a tumble dryer. A dehumidifier should be much cheaper than using a traditional vented or condenser dryer, but the difference isn’t so big when compared to the most energy-efficient heat pump dryers. As cleaning expert, Matthew Harrison from Price Your Job explains, if you house suffers from more serious damp issues, then 'to prevent future mould problems, you should consider draught-proofingand other jobs which will prevent moisture from entering your home in the first place'. Do dehumidifiers help to dry clothes? In reality, a dehumidifier will rarely reach these numbers, so it’s not the only factor affecting a machine’s extraction effectiveness. This is because extraction varies greatly depending on the temperature and humidity of the air.

However, thePro Breeze 20L Premium Dehumidifier does win on price, coming in a fair bit cheaper than the MeacoDry Arete One.Unlike a compressor dehumidifier that passes air over a cold coil to condense the water from it, a desiccant dehumidifier uses a 'desiccant chemical' to absorb the moisture from the air. As a result, desiccant dehumidifiers are the best option for rooms that are likely to fall below 15°c, as at lower temperatures compressor and Peltier models can struggle to work efficiently. If you need a solid dehumidifier that has both a compact size and offers the functionality of full-size models, we highly suggest taking a closer look at the LONOVE Electric Desiccant Dehumidifier. As Chris Michael, Managing Director of the air quality brand Meaco says, inside the home, 'excess moisture in the air can come from drying clothes in the house, boiling vegetables, putting the kettle on, bathing, showering, open flame gas style heating, damp clothing, breathing, and the damp British weather.'
