So you decide to offer them a piece of candy to quiet them down and get them to listen to your instructions. If they do this in the moment while you’re on the phone and listen properly, the candy works as a reward for the good behavior This method allows children to be rewarded for their achievements while learning that making mistakes does not detract from the progress they’ve made. MORE POSITIVE PARENTING IDEAS YOU MIGHT LIKE:

We are all looking for positive parenting solutions, and we have a unique way to motivate good behavior and reward it, using a marble jar. This works great for preschoolers and elementary aged kids. How to Use a Marble Jar to Reward Good Behavior In Kids Watching their little jar fill up throughout the day is half the fun and helps encourage your child to continue practicing those positive behaviors and earn rewards. Dr. Kennedy-Moore is a fan of specific, verbal praise. “Children love to please their parents,” she says. “We want to make sure we are pleasable.”) Use the “fill” button to add marbles to the jar. Then, use the “total” button to show how many marbles are in the jar. Next, add or subtract marbles from the jar and ask students to determine the new total. If you start taking them away often, you are going to lose the ‘power’ that this has because it is going to take them too long to get their goal.

OPTION: you could use chalkboard paint on your jar & draw on the fill line with chalk so that it is easily moveable as they get older. The goal is simple: Fill your jar with cotton balls. They get a cotton ball for doing something nice or saying something kind, without prompting. The child earns cotton balls for doing kind things. Easy enough, right? What is the reward for filling their jar?

It worked! They went bowling the next day. What happens after the jar is filled and we’ve done the reward? A small treat or tangible reward here and there isn’t the end of the world, but it often isn’t the best way to deal with bad behavior. The best part is that you get to determine how many marbles your child will receive for their different positive behavior. One of my favorites is a warm fuzzies jar. You can fill it with pom poms for every time your child does an act of service for someone else in the family. This is a great way to foster family service at home. Never Use The Marble Jar As A Form of Punishment Either way, you’ll need to lay out those expectations when you first introduce the marble jar reward system so students have a clear understanding of what is at stake. You can also use the marble jar with friends and make it a little competition with each child choosing their own reward. Did you know that you can use a virtual marble jar as well? Use the “fill” button to add marbles to the jar. Ask students to estimate how many marbles there are. Then, discuss estimation strategies before showing the total and seeing which student estimated the closest number.
