I would say that a younger audience than Walliam's usual will love this. It's a series of short epsiodes rather than one novel. Each chapter introduces us to a different child, each of whom has their own unique traits. We get to meet a boy who dribbles and sleeps the day away, another who cultivates his own nits to become a super-villain, one girl who can't stop moving, another who never throws anything away or cleans her room. And of course, a boy who collects his bogeys. For children older, reading for themselves, these are visually very appealing stories, with plenty of text-play, 'rude' words and pictures, and of course Raj throughout, shaking his head at the terrible doings of the young rascals. urn:lcp:worldsworstchild0000wall:epub:58e5b24e-e253-4a27-83d3-7b1bc47fa9c8 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier worldsworstchild0000wall Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t8rc70p3p Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780008197032 Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2022-01-01 15:17:32 Boxid IA40028811 Camera Sony Alpha-A6300 (Control) Collection_set printdisabled External-identifier

Chan welcomed the change, but called on HarperCollins to be more transparent about its thinking. “The initial response of the removal of Brian Wong’s story is a start after our conversations earlier this year, however HarperCollins has been reluctant to commit to anything further which holds them accountable and sets an example as a leader in consumer publishing. Asian Leadership Collective hopes that more transparent communication from HarperCollins will be released to the wider public on why the story is being removed and changed,” she said. “We believe HarperCollins is more than capable in actioning the above and in showing that they are an inclusive, strong thought leader and ally on these issues. HarperCollins needs to be transparent and take accountability for the harmful narratives portrayed in their books.” It's a story that a very talented child could have written, and I mean this in a positive way - it's just the sort of book that comes out of the imagination of a primary school student, tapping into their interests. Walliams gets to play up to his silliest whims, and creates here a very funny series of short stories about the stereotypes that readers will most enjoy reading about - the most disgusting kid in class, the brainiest, the laziest. Now HarperCollins is set to remove the story from the next edition of The World’s Worst Children, which is out in March. “In consultation with our author and illustrator we can confirm that a new story will be written to replace ‘Brian Wong’ in future editions of The World’s Worst Children,” HarperCollins said in a statement. “The update will be scheduled at the next reprint as part of an ongoing commitment to regularly reviewing content.”In May, Ma met with publisher HarperCollins, along with Anna Chan from the Asian Leadership Collective, to discuss how “problematic” the story was. “[We] shared our personal experiences of some of the hardships we had growing up and being teased for being a BBC (British-born Chinese). Stories like Brian Wong have a role to play in normalising jokes on minorities from a young age and we want this to be removed,” she said at the time. “We were open and honest with HarperCollins. We want fairer representation to the wider ESEA community and we feel books that educate kids on diversity should be done fairly, rather than joking about harmful stereotypes.” Ocr tesseract 4.1.1 Ocr_detected_lang en Ocr_detected_lang_conf 1.0000 Ocr_detected_script Latin Ocr_detected_script_conf 1.0000 Ocr_module_version 0.0.10 Ocr_parameters -l eng Old_pallet IA-NS-2000185 Openlibrary_edition Asian Leadership Collective also wrote to HarperCollins, asking for details of the process the book went through before it was signed off, and for information about how diverse the team who created it was.

The change to The World’s Worst Children follows the news that Kate Clanchy is set to rewrite her Orwell prize-winning book Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me after criticism of her portrayal of children of colour. Her publisher Picador have not yet announced when the updated version will be published. One of my favourites I think, by the author. No plot to speak of, just a series of enjoyable silly stories that will have children laughing with pleasure. And the Ross illustrations perfectly accompany - with glee! Nothing is off bounds, giant bogey balls, seas of spit, stink monsters, bottom burps (in full colour of course).
