The base colours are pretty standard, so if you’ve read through any of my Stormcast tutorials or watched any of the videos on our youtube channel (here), then you’ll have a fair idea. Kind of depends on how you define 'best'... To me, the best, shiniest, and most GOLD gold always comes from a spray or an airbrush. Something about that method of application always makes metallics appear more metal I think. Also acrylic metallics aren't as METAL as enamel based ones in a lot of cases (AK Xtreme Metal is a range that I think looks amazing). Compared to terrain, which, broadly, is flat and regular, miniatures are much fussier to spray paint. They’re covered in little nooks and crannies. Final highlight the bottom-right of the jewel with an even smaller layer of Baharroth Blue mixed with White.

In step 4 above switch the Vallejo metal color gold and Vallejo metal color chrome mixture to Scale 75 cintrine alchemy.Heresy isn’t easy – you have to muster your forces, plan the route to Terra and make sure that your armour looks good. Fortunately, Horus Heresy mastermind and Alpha Legion commander Anuj is on hand to guide us through painting the nine Traitor Legions to a fast, Battle Ready standard with Contrast paint. Finally… I say finally, there’s still a lot of work on them now, as they’ve got a lot of small parts that I haven’t done yet, so start to finish, here’s how I did each section. Retributor Ribbons – Two layers of highlights, the first is Rakarth Flesh and a little white added, the second is just adding more white to the previous mix. I have a 20 year old pot of Citadel “Shining Gold”. I generally put that over primer (I almost always use white primer) then wash with Reikland Fleshshade.

Thus, you rarely do one layer of metallic paint. It's common to use different colors to highlight, but this can leave the basecoat visible in the low spots looking rather dull. I prefer to use two coats of whatever base metallic color I'm using, to get more complete coverage with the aluminum flakes. That took me about 75 minutes, including time spent waiting for stuff to dry, so spraying the other 6 infantry and all 6 bikes shouldn’t take any longer than that. Although their numbers were greatly reduced during the Battle of the Webway during the Horus Heresy, the Legio Custodes now once again numbers ten thousand warriors, each dedicated to the protection of Terra. Since the return of Roboute Guilliman and his ascension to the role of Imperial Regent, they have lifted their self-imposed Edict of Restraint and once again begun crusading across the Imperium to bring swift death to the foes of mankind. They played a pivotal role in Guilliman’s battle against Magnus and the Thousand Sons on Luna, and in the defense of the Imperial palace. Such is their might that the Administratum has never recorded a single loss for the a battle that the Custodes have participated in. Review: New Vallejo Game Color range – now for pro painters only? 3k views | posted on January 7, 2023It’ll take a few coats of airbrushing to get solid, even coverage. But it’ll be easy going. Make sure you let each layer dry before applying the next airbrushed-layer. Can You Dry Brush Retributor Armour Metallic Gold? The spray version isn’t what we thought it could be. But, how about airbrushing the Retributor Armour from the paint pot? Can that be done? The thinner is mixed about 1:10 (more gold metallic paint to less thinner). It doesn’t take much to thin the Retributor Armour paint. Make sure you shake your pot before you mix it with any thinners. The metallic flakes do tend to settle if the pot is left sitting around for a while. A tip to help paint neat lines is to hold the model so that you paint the lines vertically. As your fingers bend in that direction you’ll have far more control painting vertical lines from top to bottom. Step 4 – HighlightI thought one can would cover 21 infantry models and 6 bikes. It actually covered 14 infantry models (1 Trajann, 1 Vexilus Praetor, 6 Allarus, 6 Custodians) and the bases for the 6 bikes. The colour is bright enough to have plenty of pop and the consistency helps it flow into places where water would naturally accumulate and cause rust. Spraying my Custodes with Retributor Armour: notes to self

Cover all but the deepest recesses in Rhinox Hide / Vallejo Burnt Umber (whichever you have to hand). Again, I do this with an airbrush for time’s sake but you can do this with a brush quite easily. There’s more to painting the Adeptus Custodes than just spraying your models down with Retributor Armor spray – though that’s certainly an option if you want to save time.
