The 7800X3D's worst performance against the 13900K was Returnal, where it averaged about 12.5% fewer fps, while still managing an impressive score of 224 fps. Meanwhile, the 7800X3D battled the 13900K to a technical decision in Total War: Warhammer III (552 fps for the 7800X3D to the 13900K's 594 fps), while handily beating the more powerful processor in F1 2022 and Tiny Tina's Wonderland. And while this chip is slightly more expensive than the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D was when it launched, the price inflation isn't the worst I've seen, so I won't complain too much on that front. When it comes to productivity though, the 13900K is simply in a different league, as is the 13700K. Calling these test scores for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D uninspiring for the money wouldn’t be too far off of the mark. We don’t say such things lightly, but all of the processors we just named cost less—some, like the Ryzen 5 7600 and the Core i5-12600K, by hundreds of dollars. Regardless, the Core i5-12600K had as much as a 12% performance advantage in select tests, and the two chips effectively tied in the best test-case scenario for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The cheaper Ryzen 7 7700X was also faster than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D by as much as 24%. Gaming Tests

Even with the fix in Horizon Zero Dawn, the 7800X3D is still faster than the 13900K, delivering 6% more performance in this game. Not a huge difference, but previous GeForce drivers handed AMD a significant advantage in this game. The 7800X3D is also just 7% faster than the 7700X, so 3D V-Cache isn't helping much here.Outside of what the spec sheet says, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is notable for using a single-core complex (CCX). The Ryzen 9 7950X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X3D both used a dual CCX design, forcing AMD to focus the cache on a single CCX. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D doesn’t have that problem, which allows for faster transfers. Ultimately, that translates into higher gaming performance in some titles, which I’ll dig into later. Test configurations Jacob Roach / Digital Trends Both are extremely power hungry for all core productivity workloads though, and need to be power limited, and at that point you are better served by the 7950X or 7950X3D which typically deliver a similar level of performance to that of an unlimited i7 or i9 while reducing total system usage by half, which is a staggering difference. There was some speculation that AMD released the Ryzen 9 7950X3D first because the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which is about half the price, is just as fast in games. My testing lends some credibility to that assumption. In nearly all games, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is just as fast, and in some games, it’s even faster. The Core i9-13900K is still a mighty impressive processor and a terrific gaming CPU, but it's not without its flaws. The need for expensive DDR5 memory to roughly match the 7800X3D hurts its value, though it will still get reasonably close with much cheaper memory, so as we see it the real issue here is power consumption, and of course, platform longevity. The Riftbreaker is another game where Zen 4 processors aren't particularly impressive. The 7800X3D manages 225 fps on average, making the 13700K 2% faster which means performance between these two parts is basically identical, but the 13900K is 8% faster.

We've been asked by some members of the driving simulator community to change the way we test ACC, moving away from the Medium preset to Epic, so that's what we've done and this has led to some interesting results which verify what some sim racers have been reporting. The 7800X3D is impressive when it comes to power consumption. For example, the 13600K was 11% faster here, but for that extra performance we saw a whopping 52% increase in total system power consumption. Along with updating the RTX 4090 with the latest GeForce drivers, we've also updated all the motherboards BIOS revisions and we've moved the LGA1700 test system over to the Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX using DDR5-7200 CL34 memory. As for the AM5 test system, that's still using the Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master with DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, as that's the fastest memory speed that will work with all Zen 4 processors. Simply put, AMD's Ryzen 7 7800X3D fails to fill much of a niche. If you are after a fast processor in terms of pure CPU grunt, you’d be better off with almost any other chip shown in the charts above. Almost all of them are faster, and many of them are cheaper, too. Naturally, this means the Ryzen 7 7800X3D also doesn’t make sense as a budget option. AMD reworked the CCX on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D somewhat to improve its energy efficiency compared with other Ryzen 7000-series processors that don’t have the 3D V-Cache. This was necessary to help accommodate the added heat and power demands of the 3D V-Cache, and it results in the Ryzen 7 7800X3D being one of the more energy-efficient options we’ve tested. In any case, these chips will be sure to provide some new qualities in performance and pricing. It’s unclear as of yet how the chips will size up to Intel’s own options, but the firm has remained relatively consumer-facing in its approach to new chip and so all being well they’ll be a competitive option. What is the maximum RAM speed for 7800X3D? When running the all-core workload in Cinebench R23, the 7800X3D is 8% slower than the 7700X and a massive 21% slower than the 13600K and 37% slower than the 13700K. So in terms of value, this will be a poor offering for productivity and at this price point you'd certainly be better off with the Core i7-13700K. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D has impressed us with its performance, but we're not blown away by the FPS figures.
