More chart debuts from King, Simply Red, Fine Young Cannibals, and The Dream Academy lead toward the disc’s closing track from Strawberry Switchblade with the Pop classic ‘Since Yesterday’. As always, the 3LP edition offers an unavoidable, cut-down selection, in this instance highlighting 47 tracks from 1980, but both tracklistings are available in full, below. The first single from Sting's debut solo album is included alongside massive trans-Atlantic hits from Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, The Power Station and Tina Turner - plus some of the decades' most iconic hits including a-ha with 'Take On Me'. My other gripe with these is the artists which appear more than once in any one year on these albums - just seems unnecessary. s‘The Edge of Heaven’, two superb chart-toppers and also offers a pair of tracks from new sensation a-ha in ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’ (which out-charted ‘Take On Me’ in the UK) and ‘I’ve Been Losing You’, the first single from their second album Scoundrel Days. They all sound absolute great, they've really put some effort in to the mastering of these to make sure they pop in your ears in all the places - a little quiet maybe on the volume, but not really an issue, and assume that's possibly to do with the amount of tracks they've managed to cram on each slab of the vinyl. The 3LP red vinyl edition is strictly limited to 3,000 copies, while the deluxe book 4CD edition is limited to 5000 units. It's hardly one to put on at a party, which seems a shame when I'd have thought that these albums are geared for exactly that really. Mid-1980s Synth and Pop from Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, Red Box, Scritti Politti and Stephen Duffy follow – as does the debut ‘Election Day’ from Duran Duran side project Arcadia.

For example, 1981 LP1 Side A - who wants to listen to Blondie, then Olivia NJ and then a slow one from Lionel / Diana. This Special Edition CD is housed in ‘hard-back-book’ packaging, including a 28-page booklet featuring a summary of the year, a track-by-track guide, a quiz, and original singles artwork. Just feels like so far these albums are missing a bit of trick - you'd have never have had any of this on the original UK series, the original compiler Ashley Abram wouldn't have had any of it! saw British artists achieving unprecedented success across the world with ‘Every Breath You Take’ from The Police being the year’s biggest seller in the U.

Putting the sleeves to one side, which to me just seems all a bit lazy (why couldn't they do a nice job of a gatefold at least) - it's the compiling of these albums which I have the issue with. Products labelled '*item fulfilled by Exertis on behalf of hmv' will be supplied to you directly by Exertis via their approved couriers.I appreciate that there are certain limitations with putting together a compilation album such as international artist participation, etc. A large number of established artists also scored their biggest ever hits in 1983 : Bonnie Tyler produced a global smash with ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’, Billy Joel’s ‘Uptown Girl’ introduced his biggest selling album in the U. K., Lionel Richie’s ‘All Night Long’ was the year’s feel-good track, Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’ was an instant classic on release, and Tina Turner hit big with ‘Let’s Stay Together’, which would lead to the huge success of the ‘Private Dancer’ album the following year…. from The Smiths - setting the tone for a run of 'Alternative' hits including The Cure with 'Close To Me', 'Duel' from Propaganda, and 'She Sells Sanctuary' from The Cult. Madness (‘Baggy Trousers’), Ultravox (‘Sleepwalk’), Roxy Music (‘Oh Yeah’), OMD (‘Enola Gay’) and many more.

The final disc starts off exploring mid-80s Dance, Electro and Hip-Hop crossover before moving on to some ‘grown up’ pop from the likes of Sting, Bryan Ferry, more Tears For Fears and Marillion. John Lennon’s‘(Just Like) Starting Over’ (the song that was falling down the charts when he was murdered and then subsequently rose to the top) starts CD 2 which then goes into ‘rock mode’ for a bit, with contributions from The Rolling Stones (‘Emotional Rescue’), Stray Cats (‘Runaway Boys’), Status Quo (‘What You’re Proposing’), Rainbow (‘All Night Long’), Judas Priest (‘Breaking The Law’) and Motörhead (‘Ace of Spades’). The 4CD set (also available in cheaper ‘standard’ packaging) offer 85 tracksacross the four discs and is a wonderful reminder of just how good 1980 was, with its intersection of pure pop, new wave, post-punk, the beginnings of new romanticism, disco hangovers from the ’70s along with some weird and wonderful ‘forgotten’ tracks.
