Description

Although in many respects it is true to life and contains some historical figures, The Edinburgh Skating Club (2022) is a work of fiction. Those who wish to know more about the origins, membership, customs, and rules of the Club can find much interesting information in The Edinburgh Skating Club 1778-1966 (pictured left) by Margaret Elliot and published in volume XXXIII of the Book of the Old Edinburgh Club, part 2, (1971). Mr and Mrs J.H. Johnson presented a cup for the new British Pair Skating Championship and won it themselves at the Haymarket rink in Edinburgh, which opened in 1912. Until 2000, it was the only senior national championship ever to be held in Scotland. Mirroring the historical friendship between middle-aged women Alison and Katherine is an amusing modern couple, university historians Clare Sharp and Jenny Brodie. They are drawn into a strange conspiracy to prove that the famous picture by Henry Raeburn, The Skating Minister, is in fact by another artist and of another subject. Outside Scotland, not everyone knows that there has been a real controversy over the authorship of this picture. Once I had learned of this, I further enjoyed Clare and Jenny’s detective work in museums and archives. But these scenes would be better if some conclusions had been left implicit, for the reader to draw.

A centenary history of the NSA had been written ( "Our Skating Heritage by Denis L.Bird) and a leather bound copy was presented to Her Majesty. The gala was preceded by a parade of past British Champions. At that time no male heir had been born and had Albert drowned the whole monarchial succession would have been different and there would have been no Queen Elizabeth ll !! 1860-61The European Championship for Ladies was held at the Empress Hall in London and in the Ladies Championship, Britain took all three medals. Cecilia Colledge, Megan Taylor and 14 year old, Daphne Walker taking Gold, Silver and Bronze. Graham Sharp became the first Englishman to win the European Men's title with Freddie Tomlins in Silver medal position.

The World Men's Championship was held at the Ice Club, Westminster. The winner was the legendary Swedish architect, poet and painter, Gillis Grafstrom(1893-1938) Three time Olympic Gold medallist and runner up in 1932, he seldom bothered to enter the World Championships, but when he did , he won. Severe unemployment led to the British Government to enquire whether it was necessary to employ foreign Coaches at British Rinks. The NSA replied that it was, but decided to improve the quality of tuition by setting up Instructors tests at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. The NSA published a pamphlet "Notes for Guidance in planning and provision for ice and roller skating rinks". It was prepared in consultation with the NSA's architects, Peter Jordan, H.George Marsh and Ernest Matthews, themselves former skaters. 1976 Burnt Offerings | Birlinn Ltd - Independent Scottish Publisher - buy books online <img height="1" width="1"Unfortunately, the narrative is rather simplistic and very undemanding. I was at a loss to see why some characters featured at all, and why others seemed to change personality on a daily basis. I note that the author has previously published children's fiction and i don't feel that she has, at this point, transitioned to the adult reader. Catalogue of Archives and Manuscripts Collections | National Library of Scotland | NLSMSS | Minutes, accounts, and miscellaneous papers of the Edinburgh Skating Club". manuscripts.nls.uk. National Library of Scotland . Retrieved 25 January 2022. Compulsory or "School" figures (the tracing of turns or loops in figure eights or 3 circle patterns) were discontinued after the World Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. 1994 Skaters went to War and some lost their lives amongst them, Walter Gregory, Freddie Tomlins and Tony Austin. Others fought with distinction. Graham Sharp became a Captain in the Army. Geoffrey Yates (1936 Olympics) a Major in the Royal Marines, Cecilia Colledge a driver in the Mechanised Transport Corps, Denis Silverthorne 1939 Junior Champion and Leslie Cliff ( Pair Champion) became officers in the RAF. Gender-confusing, feminist romance about a painting by Scottish portraitist Raeburn (or is it ? That is the point !)... To be recommended to readers looking for LGBTQ+ literature (there isn't much good on the market) and art fans.

Rinks began to re-open after the war. The British Championships were revived in May at Wembley. Championship winners were Cecilia Colledge, Graham Sharp and Denis and Winifred Silverthorne. Cecilia Colledge retained her European title in St Moritz, Switzerland, but was unexpectedly beaten in her defence of the World Championship, by Megan Taylor. The claim to the 1642 founding date appears to derive from a small book published by the club council in 1865, The Edinburgh Skating-Club with Diagrams of Figures and a List of the Members. As of that writing, the club's oldest extant records were dated January 1778, and the reference to 1642 appeared only in club records from long after that period. [1]Vth Winter Olympic Games were held in St Moritz, Switzerland. Jeanette Altwegg gained bronze for Britain in the Ladies event. The NSA instituted tests in pair skating at bronze, silver and gold level. Also the Junior Pair Skating Championship was introduced. 1950 I found the overall idea nice but somewhat the narrative is a bit contrived, the story takes turns that are too improbable at times - I won't say more because I don't want to create spoilers.
