If you’re looking for more, here’s what the Darksaber is, where we’ve seen it before, and what it means for the future of Mandalore. What Is the Darksaber? Lucasfilm

The durable light-up metal hilt features design and deco based on the Darksaber seen in the live-action series The Mandalorian on Disney Plus It is said, one warrior will defeat 20, and the multitudes will fall before it. If, however, it is not won in combat and falls into the hands of the undeserving, it will be a curse unto the nation. Mandalore will be laid to waste and its people scattered to the four winds." ―The Armorer to Din Djarin [11] After the Night of a Thousand Tears, the Empire desecrated Mandalore and Bo-Katan surrendered the Darksaber to Moff Gideon, hoping that the Empire would stop the Great Purge of Mandalore. However, the Empire continued with the Purge. She fled the planet, but continued to lead the Nite Owls and was intent on eventually reclaiming the Darksaber and Mandalore. By circa 9 ABY, after the fall of the Empire, Gideon still possessed the Darksaber, and was the leader of an Imperial remnant on the planet of Nevarro. During his rescue of the Force-sensitive foundling Grogu from Gideon, the Mandalorian Din Djarin won the Darksaber from Gideon in combat. He attempted to pass the Darksaber on to Bo-Katan, but she declined, knowing that being once more gifted the Darksaber would make her claim to the throne illegitimate. Later, Djarin was challenged for the right to wield the weapon by Paz Vizsla, a descendant of Tarre Vizsla, on Glavis Ringworld. Djarin won the fight but was formally expelled from the Children of the Watch following the duel. Djarin continued to wield the Darksaber as his own. Several years later, during the days of the Galactic Empire, Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian weapons expert, found the Darksaber on Dathomir. Sabine trained to use the saber under the tutelage of Ezra Bridger and later the Jedi Kanan Jarrus. When Sabine returned to Mandalore to help stop the Empire from killing all of the remaining Mandalorians, using a weapon she herself created, Sabine uses the Darksaber against the Imperial soldiers. Sabine Wren with the Darksaber on Mandalore Image: Lucasfilm The Darksaber is made of beskar, just like the Mandalorians’ other weapons. The hilt is probably heavier than a conventional lightsaber due to the nature of beskar, yet Tarre Vizsla apparently had no trouble using the weapon. The former Sith used the Darksaber for his own dark purposes, including killing one of the people who meant the most to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Maul also wielded it against his former master when Darth Sidious traveled to Mandalore to quash him as a potential rival to his power, and later crossed blades with General Grievous and Mace Windu in the comic series Darth Maul - Son of Dathomir. I (Shii-Cho) · II (Makashi) · III (Soresu) · IV (Ataru) · V (Shien/Djem So) · VI (Niman) · VII (Juyo/Vaapad) · Forbidden The Empire is the real party responsible for Mandalore’s destruction, not an old prophecy. Nevertheless, the weight of guilt and tradition leans heavily on Bo-Katan’s shoulders, making the leader of the Nite Owls refuse Din’s gift. While Bo-Katan is unhappy with Din holding the Darksaber (and Mandalore’s throne), she’s willing to respect old traditions. Even so, Bo-Katan still feels entitled to Mandalore’s throne, which might lead her to fight Din for it in The Mandalorian’s Season 3.

(Image credit: Ian Stokes) Why was the reappearance of the legendary weapon such a huge moment in the Disney+ series? Let’s take a look at the history of the Darksaber, from the warriors who wielded it during the long history of Mandalore to what it means to see it again in the galaxy after the events of the Galactic Civil War. This was surely not the future Bo-Katan wanted, but perhaps it was something she foresaw. Bo-Katan is practical, but a nagging thought began to weigh on her as she witnessed her home fall under the Empire’s control. The sign of her leadership, the Darksaber, wasn’t rightfully earned. The Empire at her door would no doubt remind her of the legend surrounding the Darksaber, especially the part about Mandalore being “laid to waste” if the blade is wielded by the undeserving. Increasingly haunted by these fears and insecurities, she likely experienced the same resistance that Din felt when lifting the blade. In short, the darksaber resents being used by a self-centered bounty hunter who really isn’t concerned about Mandalore, which is why Din Djarin had so much difficulty controlling it. Moff Gideon understood the cultural importance of the Darksaber, and destroyed it in part to win a symbolic victory against the Mandalorians. He had previously advantage of the divisions between the different Mandalorian clans, and no doubt hoped they would be unable to cooperate without the Darksaber - a symbol giving a leader authority. It is ironic, then, that Moff Gideon was ultimately defeated by a union of Mandalorian clans who had previously been enemies, those led by Bo-Katan Kryze and the Armorer. Their victory - and, indeed, their survival - shows there is still a future for Mandalore. In The Mandalorian Season 2 finale, Moff Gideon implies that he himself may be responsible for overthrowing Bo-Katan and robbing Mandalore of its rightful ruler, which would explain the animosity between the two of them hinted at in Bo-Katan's first Mandalorian appearance in episode 203. We're certain to learn more about the Darksaber's history and the previous encounters between Gideon and Bo-Katan in The Mandalorian Season 3. Is The Darksaber Cursed?

Darksaberwas seen for the first time in Star Wars: The Clone Wars – “The Mandalore Plot”. Other prominent appearances include: Star Wars: The Clone Wars – “Shades of Reason”, Star Wars: The Clone Wars – “A Friend in Need”, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, Star Wars: The Clone Wars – “The Lawless”, Star Wars: Galactic Defense, Star Wars: The Clone Wars – “Shades of Reason”, Star Wars: Force Arena. FIND THE DARKSABER REPLICA IN THE REAL WORLD Vizsla put up a great battle, using both the Darksaber and the various weapons of his armor, but Maul disarmed him with the Darksaber, and he was swiftly vanquished and killed. Maul then took control of the Death Watch and grabbed the Darksaber. Combining advanced LEDs and entertainment-inspired Lightsaber sound effects, the Force FX Elite Lightsaber is the most realistic Force FX Lightsaber yet As the civil war on Mandalore ultimately drew to a close, Sabine offered the Darksaber to Bo-Katan Kryze, an important figure in the liberation of Mandalore -- and Duchess Satine’s sister. Bo-Katan accepted the symbol of her people and became the next leader of Mandalore, bracing for an uncertain future and retaliation by the Empire.Kanan showed it to the Mandalorian warrior Fenn Rau in “Trials of the Darksaber,” who shared the artifact’s history. “This saber is an important symbol to [House Vizsla] and respected by the other clans,” said Rau. “If Sabine can wield this saber, she can reunite one of the most powerful houses in all of Mandalore.” First thing to know about the Darksaber: There’s only one of them. It’s a bit of a collector’s item in the world of Star Wars, with a history a hell of a lot longer and more complicated than the Skywalker family’s blue lightsaber. Even as The Mandalorian forges new links to projects like The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, it also makes an unexpected connection to a much more distant part of the Star Wars timeline. Emily Swallow's character, The Armorer, recalls the ancient battles between the Mandalorians and the Jedi, a conflict which directly set the stage for the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
